I don't understand the vitriol at a new contract.

Of all of our CB, DIer is the perfect backup - since he can adequately cover RCB, CCB, and LCB.

The problem is not DIer staying at Spurs. The problem is if Dier remains as a key starter.

ETA - And as far as I know, Dier has never disrespected the badge, the fans, or his teammates.

Although I am surprised that he doesn’t want a change of scenery as it might be good for his career.

I don't know what you mean by this - Dier has already had a career that exceeds 99% of footballers. He has been a key player on a top team in the PL. He has played a key role for England.

His career is winding down - there is no need for a new place, particularly if he is comfortable here personally and there is no team that will enhance his career at this stage. He might play more games at a lower level, but that is not really good for one's career.

If he were to go, wonder what clubs would be likely destinations. Imagine it would be midtable and below or maybe a stint abroad. Notts Forest seem to like to spend so would be nice if they showed interest. To be fair with the amount of pointing/arm waving he and Hojbjerg for that matter get through, they maybe better off forging careers as cricket umpires instead.

too many players are kept here on the basis they would be 'good backup', we need a complete clear out, also dier cant cover rcb or lcb, he has the mobility of a broken truck, he can barely player in the centre of a back 3, with players covering him

Well, we are not replacing all of Dier, Sanchez and Tanganga (and Lenglet) this summer. Given that we actually need backups, Dier fits that role.

Now, if we don’t buy a starting CB this summer and Dier remains in that role next season - get mad. But not at Dier.

I agree, I know I will get a whole bunch of dislikes but dier is not really that bad. Yes not the level we need

It defies belief that we would be offering Dier a new 3-year-contract, unless we have our new DoF and Head Coach lined up and both are - inexplicably - in agreement. Definitely not a decision Levy should be making in absence of that input.

I think the issue is his ‘status’ as a a back up squad player then fine but not as a key turn to first choice CB

Ball watching defender, with limited awareness of what is going on around him IMO.
Not something you would expect from a seasoned pro approaching 30.
Playing in a back-three also helps to mitigate his weaknesses, and would struggle more in a back-four.
Whereas we cannot replace all CBs in one window, I would have let his contract expire next summer.
I do not hate Dier, but I do not believe that any top six club would pick him up even as a free agent.

I think l he would be mad to join another premier league team. He would, as you say, end up in a mid-lower half team.
With his experience playing in Portugal, he could probably play for quite a few good teams in Europe, play champions league football and do very nicely for himself in a league that suits him better.

Any new contract would have to be based on him being a back up/squad player though.

We're obviously taking an extended leave of ambition with this new deal for Dier - no offense to him.

Time to be ruthless and take away the temptation to go for comfortable. Dier, Davies, Tanganga, Sanchez and Sess need to be moved on.

5 defenders in one go isn't going to happen. Perisic will most likely go as well.

First of all we shouldn't be offering senior contracts to anyone right now without the two people who should decide in place .

And my opinion on Dier is that he needs a fresh start and so do we. The old fashioned way to see it would be to protect our asset by getting him under contract and then sell but the market doesn't work that way anymore. Nobody apart from the prem has any money.

I'd personally let him run his deal down, keep him so we don't have to buy another defender on top of what we already need

There are always a lot of these types of posts from fans, and while the players you list would definitely not be of the required ability to push us on in the next few years, you can't just ditch a multitude of player in the same position in one go !

Also i do think that Dier, Davies and Sanchez would, individually, all be decent enough to be brought into a well functioning side from the bench and do a job. The reason these players are so disrespected is because we've been playing 2 or 3 of them together, and in a poorly functioning side.

his contract runs out next year, thats 3 transfer windows to clear out defence, plenty of time, 3 year contract is way too long, and if you get sort out your CB problem in 3 years its going to be a long few years...

People still having a rage wank about this I see.

Have we had a link from someone other than Jamie O fucking hara yet? Or are people still just choosing to rage over a completely bollocks article.
