His best form under Poch was while playing as part of a back 3, in the middle of Jan & Toby. Even when he was playing CDM on paper, in reality he dropped into the heart of defence when we had possession (to allow Walker & Rose to bomb forwards) and roamed out into CM to support our high press when out of possession.

If he can maintain his recent form, I can't see how Southgate could justify not taking him to Qatar to play in a back 3.

wow - that bank of 5 was so well marshalled, and was quick to move out without Lloris having to scream his head off.
Dier also played well as he usually does. His one weakness remains his distribution.

He looked to be playing in pain - lets hope he recovers asap.

Really can't be overstated how important having that solid CB foundation is with Dier and Romero as key figures, along with Davies. That game could and probably would have been very different without Dier's presence.

imagine if we have jan or someone like jan at LCB and that’s our first choice back 3 for next season

It was a cumulative thing, Dier back (calming and authoritive) which helped Davies imo and also meant Romero on the right side could help Royal much more than Sanchez did in the last couple of games.

He was immense last night. I have to say I never thought I’d see the day where he would be such an important player for us.

I think Conte’s tactical set up suits him and he’s making the most of it. Fair play. His use of the ball is much improved too.

Yeah and I think Mourinho has to take a bit of credit for bigging him up and giving him confidence which is now shining though. Yeah he will make the odd cock up like anyone does but he brings so much calmness and stability, such an important player and who would have said that a couple of seasons ago.

I agree, think Conte needs to take a lot of credit for his improvement.

There is still hope for Sanchez I still believe he has the ability. If he can limit his rashness he is still young enough to be a top defender.

Dier has really put his head down and turn his career around so happy for him hope he continues to be better.

Romero is our best defender by far

I disagree then again it depends which of the three he plays. I think Romero is best ont he right but dont think eh is better than Dier in the middle of the three. Is he more talented? thats up for debate but positionally on the right he is better than Dier but in the middle Dier is better.

I think it's a case of in terms of individual ability then Romero is the best defender at the club but as we currently are, there's no more important defender at the club than Dier, you might even argue player because if Kane got injured then you can imagine we could muddle through but we've seen what happens without Dier in our current iteration. Though personally I'd edge it to Kane I think.

Sanchez is fine when he has someone with their head screwed on alongside him, he really benefits from a steady hand on his shoulder telling him where to go and who to mark etc, and that everything will be alright. When he doesn’t have that he panics. Unless we got a big offer for him, I’d be happy enough with him being a rotation option for Romero.

I cante disagree with him being more talented thats for certain. I mentioned previously that I think sometimes the best partnerships are the ones that complement each other and not necessarily the best two defenders. I think Dier is more important than Kane merely because we dont have someone who can organise the defence other than Dier where as going forward we may get by with Son, Lucas and Bergwijn

Dier is our most important centre back, Romero might be our best one, but Dier makes the whole defence so much more steady.
