I’m an optimist, but I still think both Dier and Sanchez can be effective PL defenders, but they need a no1 option alongside them to do it consistently. Reminds me of Dawson, great when King was there to organise and cover, not so much on his own. Hopefully that no1 is Romero, but we shouldn’t forget Dier has been a full time centre half for one season, be good to see what a proper coach can do with him.

Still no idea what he was doing in that area of the pitch, but a wonderful moment nonetheless!
From memory he was playing right back that day so he had license to get up the pitch. Just a perfect right place/right time moment.

I've heavily criticised the guy but fair play, was very good yesterday and much more assured. Question, as with Sanchez, can he stay at that level for the majority of the season. Have my doubts and one game isn't necessarily going to change my view but would quite happily be proved wrong.

So did I six (edit: seven?!) years ago… and I’m only 33…
Good for you. Dier's only 27 now but perhaps since those appendicitis procedures, he's bulked up, falls over a lot, can't accelerate and turns like a tank - in addition to losing form.

I don't know if this was posted at the time, but fair play to Dier for being a senior player and protecting one of the younger players:

I'm a massive Eroc Dier fan and think he gets a bit of unfair treatment from a few on here. A fighter and leader in my books. Does he have the odd lapse in concentration? Sure he does... same goes for our forwards/midfield who cock up in attack. For some reason we judge defensive lapses more harshly in relation to attacking players who mess up.

But back to Dier.... I hope he and Sanchez really come good and prove the naysayers wrong.

I'm not his biggest fan and wouldn't be sad to see him leave but admit he can sometimes be a very solid defender for us. Sunday for example he was simply brilliant! The problem as we all know is, he has for some time now had lapses in concentration every single game which have cost us goals. I wouldn't agree that he has the "odd" lapse, it has been far more regular than that. Also, defenders are judged differently and that's because a mistake can regularly lead to conceding a goal. If an attacker messes up in attack and misses a chance or breaks an attack down we become frustrated but trust that they will eventually stick one away (Son on Sunday a prime example who had made some questionable choices and missed a couple before finding the net).

Yeah I get you on the attacker vs defender lapses.. I just see them as also "costing" us a game or points with poor decision making.

I think a lot of the problems that dier and Sanchez have had comes from Jose’s tactics of camping in our own penalty box for large parts of games - all defenders will eventually make mistakes in that scenario

Interesting on Sunday that as soon as we try to play more up the pitch the cbs looked much better - not a coincidence I think….

I really think Dier is a good egg and good pro just not quite consistent enough to be a top top CB but certainly an absolutely fine squad player to keep around and you never know Nuno could turn him into our coady

Casual 3 clean sheets in 3 appearances and 3 solid performances at LCB where we have been concerned about our options.

Seemed to be extremely vocal and organising the defence again tonight as well.

This thread was on page 3! Quick to tear our players down but credit where it is due he has started the season really well.

I'm one of those deluded twats who's always liked & defended Dier.

The guy was at his best under Pochettino when he had that 1 designated role to play, and a consistent partnership alongside someone. Given the same situations again, there's really no reason to believe we don't have a very capable player on our hands.

Obviously still very early days in the new process but, as you've rightly said, despite a slight brain-fart against Wolves, he's started the season very well & that's a nice positive as we look to move forward.

I think the one main thing he's done wrong, was those statements last season, where he seemed oblivious to, or refused to acknowledge his own shortcomings. There's no doubt, he was bloody poor!

But I genuinely believe the guy loves playing for THFC & the supporters, despite the flack he's got over the last few years.

Fair play to him for continuing to try to be a player for the club, rather than downing tools, sulking, running to the press with negative bullshit & doing everything he could to escape the sheer mess that the last couple of years have been.

Let's hope the consistency continues, and the smile that's returned to his (and seemingly all the players) face is here to stay.
