I always feel it’s so important to have a player like him performing, like Dawson before him, that player who bleeds for the club and all that. Get that core doing well and you are in such a good position. Might not be the fanciest player, but can be vital.

There were quite a few times you could see him barking orders during the run of play showing some real leadership in the backline. Conte has seemingly found a system of play that plays to his strengths while minimizing the exposure to his weaknesses. He was able to play much of the game with the ball in front of him receiving/intercepting it in space while giving him time to make a pass.

While i wasn't watching it closely, i noticed that several times he was swinging the ball to the far side and was passing it to the wing defenders front foot. Earlier in the season, he was making passes behind the wing defenders which forced them to move backwards to receive and slowing down the speed of play. Not sure if those memories are representative but suspect that he is doing the little things much better.

I think that was a huge test for the defenders and Dier looked even better than ever. I'm loving this run he's on.

Always had the tools to be a very good CB. Also a lot quicker than people give him credit for. What let him down was an almost guaranteed sloppy mistake every game which usually cost us a goal. Thankfully his concentration and probably confidence as well seems a lot better. Probably along with just getting more and more experience playing CB. I’d personally still like to see him shed a bit of bulk I think he’d be even better.

I really think a lot of those howlers were due to him simply playing a position he had never played in before. Like with Teddy Sheringham, the first yard is in your head. Dier was out of position, or out of shape, because his movement at CB was never instinctive. Most professional CBs have been playing that position since they were a kid. Everything is natural. Dier was learning positioning, body shape, everything from scratch in the white hot Premier League. He got ill, then we had new managers, and he lost experienced teammates.

Think back to the time he was selected for England in CM and ran the show (with Dele) against Germany. He was spraying the ball about with ease and precision. He's a serious professional, and with Conte I can see him going to international level at CB. Sure, he'll be no Maldini, but I think we're going to be seeing better and better performances from now on.
