Roy Hodgson heaped praise upon Tottenham duo Dele Alli and Eric Dier after they made their debuts in the England starting XI against France on Tuesday night.

Alli scored a wonderful 25-yard strike five minutes before half time while Dier did well to keep the threats of the likes of Yohan Cabaye and Paul Pogba quiet.

Alli was also the one who robbed Pogba of the ball to spark the attack that led to Wayne Rooney’s goal and Hodgson admitted he wanted to take the former MK Dons youngster off so the crowd could give him his standing ovation.

“He was fantastic,” said the England manager.

“It was great that I could have the luxury of bringing him off with five minutes left to play so the crowd could show their appreciation.

“I thought apart from his goal, his whole performance throughout the game was first class, and the same applies to Eric Dier.

“Here we have two guys – both of whom having very little experience in the Premier League, both making their debut from the start, but they’ve played the game like they were playing in the England team for as long as we can remember.”

It was a difficult night at Wembley due to the circumstances surrounding England's friendly with France, but after a 2-0 victory there were plenty of positives for the Three Lions.

From the emergence of Eric Dier in the centre of midfield to the top form return of skipper Wayne Rooney, former England midfielder and Sportsmail's Jamie Redknapp looks at the highlights from England's victory.

HODGSON SHOULD THANK POCHETTINO

Eric Dier is the biggest pleasant surprise for Hodgson and he owes Mauricio Pochettino for that. At Spurs, Dier’s been transformed from a versatile defender into a powerful defensive midfielder.

For me, there’s no doubt he will go to Euro 2016. Jack Wilshere now has competition for that place in front of the back four and I think Dier has a role to play, particularly against the big teams.

His first thought is always: ‘Where do I need to be when we don’t have the ball?’ It gives solidity and a great platform for England to hit on the counter.

Scholes' comments last night about Dier before kick off annoyed me a bit - said he doubted if he was good enough with the ball and doubted his International credentials for a midfield spot. Didn't get to hear the pundits' comments after the match so not sure if he mentioned Dier again or not.

That irritated me as well and I didn't hear what Scholes said after the game either. Can anyone enlighten us, please.

That's it scholes wrote off a 21 year old who has already proven he is good enough.

Yesterday was a strange night, it was actually entertaining to watch England. Swap the two fullbacks for Bertrand and Walker and that's a good staring eleven. Ah what the heck, go on stick Rose in there instead of Bertrand :D

Yeah fuck off Wilshere

It's actually sickening the way pundits talk about him as if he has a guaranteed spot in the starting elven. I'll admit he plays better for England than for Arsenal, but he's not done anything to become some sort of rock in the national team

Wilshere is a crass immature c**t. Goes without saying. Our lads on the other hand have handled themselves with good manners, character and grace and they are younger than that twat to begin with.

yep pissed me off but this isn't the first time scholes has come out with a big load of crap, you can tell he hasn't watched any spurs matches or did any research.
