I remember when there was a slight majority for selling Dier. Now you can't find a fan who never did anything but back him. I mean even my mum, who still maintains that Sir Alex (Ferguson) was a better Tottenham manager than Mourinho will be (her words) and have seen one match in this millennium, always LOVED Dier.

This injury is a big blow as Dier is our only CB who can control Antonio physically. In the home game against them after lockdown Dier had Antonio in his pocket throughout in a fantastically dominant display against a very in form striker (whose goals kept West Ham up).

I'd definitely have sold him if he'd have persisted in his "I want to play DM, I'm not a CB" phase. I've spoken very negatively about Dier the midfielder, Dier the defender is a different player altogether.

Thankfully he's woken up from that.

I still don't think he's anything special as a CB, but at least he is useful. As a DM he looked slower than Matic.

So England beat the world No 1 in the rankings and they had Dier and Maguire in defence two players that are getting pelters for different reasons . Dier is a fantastic centre half and as for mistakes well the player that everyone seems to drool over has made several mistakes leading to goals ( VVD) and the Liverpool followers see it for what it is namely every player makes the odd mistake but some fans are tolerant .
It seems that some spurs fans on here have decided Dier is Dire and the words tolerant or understanding does not seem to be in their vocabulary . As for Maguire before this season he was the first choice centre back for England and a bit of understanding for the traumatic events in Greece that may be still affecting him would not go amiss . In short every player makes mistakes if a fan likes you they will overlook any errors if they dont like you the slightest drop in form and they will lambast you .
You create a winning team with players with the commitment and attitude of Dier Jose knows this and that is why when fit Dier plays .

I fully agree with you, as we also have in the past, about where he should play. But I've started doubting whether it was Dier's "fault" that he was used in his lesser position. Interestingly he put out an interview this spring that went a long way towards suggesting that Dier himself wanted to be CB for a long time, but that out of loyalty he respected the wishes of people around him (I'm paraphrasing here, but the essence is the same).

Edit: I found the quotes I had in mind:
“The old manager knew where I stood for a long time about my position and centre-back is where I see my future and I think where I can be the best I can be."

“I always knew it would happen eventually. With Pochettino, we spoke about it over many years, not just this year. The most important thing is the team, what the team needs from its players at that time.

"But now I’m at a stage in my career where I want to be playing in my best position."

He was very clear in the past he wanted to be a DM because he thought it was his best chance of being in the England team. He only decided he wanted to be a cb when that no longer was the case.

Dunno how real that was. And even if that was the case in say 2015/2016, it seems plausible that he could have switched to CB sooner if he had his wish.

Ref Maguire it does not matter to me if he caused the traumatic events or was the victim all I am saying is I put my feeling for the individual aside and put myself in his shoes and knowing that you could go to jail must take a toll if not on the body then on the mind .
My opinion on this has nothing to do with likes or dislikes of a individual but putting myself in his place and how would I react .
I find it alarming that some have a holier than thou view when a bit of understanding would help matters .
As for Maguire the footballer he's a good player who's going thru a bad time it is a case of join the club almost every player goes thru such times once in a while and its how you come out of it that counts .

To me, this seems like we're finally "playing the game" when it comes to internationals. It's about time.
He was already with England and it’s their doctors who will have said he isn’t good to go. The scale of the paranoia on here about England call ups is quite something. Thus far there is no evidence Southgate is cavalier with player health.
