Nothing wrong with 18 year old girls ;-)

I met my wife when she was 18, 10 years on I've practically ruined her life...

I know a few members of staff at Sunderland and they were absolutely convinced he wasn't guilty. Not sure how this latest development changes things though, if at all.

I will be honest, I played with and against 'Jonno' a lot when I was younger. He was a fantastic player, but a bloody weird and a right scruffy lad. That doesn't necessarily make him a paedo or a groomer, but the accusations don't surprise me one bit.

It intrigues me though that Sunderland have stated he is still available for selection. That to me screams innocence.

From a PR point of view alone though, surely you would just suspend him and allow him to "fight for justice" or something liberal like that?

From a PR point it's probably better to suspend him but I'm glad they haven't because society these days seems to have forgotten someone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

He should have been suspended, as regardless of whether he is innocent or guilty, he will be a major distraction in terms of the club and the players going about their business, whole place will become a media circus and freak show, and that will surely unsettle the rest of the squad

Suspension is a form of punishment, so how can he be punished until proven guilty? If there's a concern about his concentration on the game, he can be given time off from the game.

suspension a bit harsh but he should be encouraged to stay away till it all blows over, put out a statement saying "head isnt right so agreed to have a break from the game"

Why isn't suspension harsh? In the normal world, if an accusation is made the normal policy is that the person accused is suspended while the investigation is ongoing

How did it take so long for someone to say this? Innocent until proven guilty just means the prosecution has to prove guilt. It doesnt mean the accused gets to live their normal life until the result of the legal proceedings. The fact that he hasnt been suspended already, to me, defies logic. If you are 27 and are having an ongoing sexual relationship with a 15 year old and dont understand thats wrong then imo you are fucked up in the head. I couldnt work with someone i knew was capable of that

The whole business has unsettled the squad for the last few months

The 'grooming' charge must be rather more worrying than what was originally suspected to be just a bit of sex after a drunken night out I would have thought.

Grooming sounds like it was him that made all the running, as opposed to girl in nightclub who should not be there hitting on a famous person while he pissed

Problem with it being just sex after a drunken night is there seems to be a fair amount of talk (allegedly) about how it was a situation where there multiple instances....gives some issues to that defence if he/she went back multiple times when (potentially) not drunk

If you met her in a nightclub you'd plough that into next week without even thinking of asking her age. However if the whole grooming bit is a thing then that's a pretty different kettle of fish. Quite easily he didn't know her age and when he rejected her she was upset and it got legal. Looks like we will be finding out one way or another once it goes to trial

Question is, will his defence team put forward the case that he didn't know, because she was in a nightclub and told him she was 18??
