If we were going to spend big on one player, which hopefully we are not, then I'd personally so much rather it be a defender we really believe in then Maddison. Our defence has been broken for years, its the biggest hole in our team imo.

I'm not sure, I think the past season or even past couple of appointments might well have scared Levy a bit.
He's been known to dip into the funds when we're in trouble.
This could well be the opportunity for the reset and rebuild that we've been crying out for and he'd be a fool to mess up this chance.
(Conte WAS his last chance for me but signing Ange has given me fresh hope of a direction change at the club).

It was never going to be easy. I'm pretty sure we tried for Hincapie last summer and in the Jan transfer window and similar noises were coming out from Bayer that they would only consider a sale if we bid 60m+

They're one of the richest teams in Germany so they're never gonna bend over for us.

Is tapsoba that player though? I admit I never heard of him prior to us being linked and he does not seem to have a massive profile.

He's 24 as well so imagine he would still be rough. I see him as a good signing but would not like us to spunk £35-£40m on him. He could easily turn out to be another Sanchez.

I don't think there's a defender out there that fits the same profile as Maddison - proven quality, safe enough bet, immediately improves us, at the right point in his career. Maybe Laporte is the closest but again would be cautius about spending £35m+ on him.

Utimately I think we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to get Maddison - The situation with Leicester being relegated and our rivals being well sorted in that position has fallen into our laps. Let's not waste it and miss out and look back in regret in a year or two.

Can only see it if we get big Kane money. Leverkusen is in no position to sell and as mentiones some are closer to depart from their back line so they will try to get some stability. And we are not in a position to make a silly Chelsea offer they can not say no to.

This is really great to hear, thanks for posting. If we can tie up Maddison and Tapsoba our starting XI is improved massively from last season when you add in Porro, Udogie and our new keeper.

Lets hope we can make this happen and add one CB too
