If we're serious about rebuilding the defence both Tapsoba and Van de Ven (or good alternatives) are a must. Defence is clearly the weakpoint of the team and good to see us decisively identifying targets early in the window. Let's hope for delivery now!

No way we have the money for both. Spend big on one first choice and unearth a cheaper 2nd centre back for competition.

Does anyone actually know how much we have to spend? Surely it depends on the payment structure of the deals and how many we get rid of etc..

I think it's going to be a huge moving jigsaw puzzle throughout the window in regards to our defense and how much we have to spend. There are so many moveable pieces, it's actually crazy when you write it out. For example on paper:

Udogie/Perisic/Sess/Regulion - Lenglet/Davies - Dier/Tanganga/Rodon - Romero/Sanchez - Porro/Emerson/Spence
- I would realistically take the right offer for 9/14 players (plus Lenglet loan end).

So when I see links to Tapsoba, van de ven, and Tosin - my guess is that only 2 max would come in and we'll continue to monitor over time. But if the club took a similar policy and got offers in, then I don't see why they can't try and completely overhaul the defenders area - it needs it.

Tapsoba could also cover at CDM, as van de ven can cover at LB - so if we want to trim the squad - having those players available for cover can be helpful to keep them happy with playing time, etc.

Nothing has been said but just my opinion with no European football and number of players to shift. There's also the history we have in one position. The last 3 summers we've signed 1 centre back in each (Rodon, Romero, Lenglet). Whenever we've been linked to multiple centre backs it's always been one or the other never both. Besides we will likely play a back 4 so only 1 is going to start alongside Romero and we're not going to spend big on competition. If we were in Europe it would be a different matter I think because they would get a lot more minutes. So in terms of what the club deem valuable it probably doesn't make sense to spend so much on depth in one position especially with several to shift.

I don't think anyone knows do they ? Those pesky 'loan to buys' we needed to do to help us out after Covid loses are obviously taking a chunk out of our budget (Porro about 40m euros due soon, Kulu just done - thats a significant outlay before a new player is brought in).

On the flip side i'm sure i read something about that 'left over' £50m from the £150m - apparently a) it's still available to be drawn and b) there was a suggestion that as any owners are only allowed to pump in £100m a year , then saving the £50m from last year means they can put in £100m again this year...... how true that is i don't know and whether that actually happens is a big question mark, but if true then that pays for Porro and Kulu (plus the new goalie) and then you'd have whatever the budget is for this summer - £100m ish ????

I agree.... that we don't really know the inner working of our finances and cash reserves.

What if we had the money all along to buy the 'loan-to-buy' players.. but the club was being prudent, keeping their powder dry incase of financial shocks, more favourable terms, selling club needing to sell for lower prices.. or it favoured us to keep the cash in the bank/invested for other things... a bigger fish became available? - and/or that signing them is not wholly coming out of this window's budget?

There's all manner of creative things WE can do, if other clubs are going to be owned and funded by nation states, or be part of a multi-club ownership money. Why not have some clever IOUs?! Well done Tottenham I say.

Deki is being paid over 6 years.

Porro is not being paid in full, likewise over a few years as usual.

The £50m can't be used.

This is the kinda link I can imagine the club throw out there to stop Bayer getting silly with their demands for Tapsoba.

Same pattern as with Raya, Fab said we were in contact with Mamardashvili middle of last week, help us out and we'll let you know when the paperwork is signed Fab.

Yes my mistake, you're correct about Deki, but i can't find anything on Porro being installments, only a Guardian article & Football London which both say a £4m loan fee was paid, with the remainder due 1st July. Similarly Alisdair Gold states the £41m is due next month in his latest video yesterday.

As for the £50m i'm not sure why you say that can't be used, it was apparently extended for another 6 months - again Alisdair Gold mentioned it yesterday, in fact he said he'd checked on the companies house website before doing the video whether we'd actually drawn on the funds yet, but we haven't. Have you got any links to anything that explains why it can't be used ?

I think AG was getting confused himself on that video. He said €40m and then almost immediately said £41m. My understanding was that the total possible payment was €45m Inc add ons.

I'm sure Romero was a one off where we did pay the remaining fee, that's what a fair % of the £100m cash injection was used for.

There were many posts in the Enic thread I think regarding the cash injection. Great if true that we can use it. However, at the time of the £150m announcement the bit that was missed was that they stated that it would be used for non football uses as well, but neglected to say how much!

We have loads of money. Can easily afford both IF the Board want to invest...that's the issue.
Of course but I'm just being realistic about what we're likely to do given our history. I prefer to set my expectations under this owner. There's what you want to do and what you think we'll do. My comments are in the latter.

Done some more research and he reminds me so much of John Stones. The composure bordering on nonchalance in possession. Effortless, progressive, accurate ball playing with either foot. Top athlete who glides across the pitch. Very good timing and positioning defensively. Like John Stones in previous years though, there is a sloppiness about his defensive play that shows up at times. Not completing defensive actions with conviction at all times, 1v1s lacking refinement. Could and probably will become as good as Stones is today, which is in the very top tier of CBs in the world. Just needs to clean up some rough edges to his game.

I'd say he could be more like our version of Saliba personally which i'll gladly take!

As much as he compliments the more aggressive and rash Gabriel, so can Tapsoba be that calming presence next to Romero.
