Mick Dennis of the Express was on SSN this morning explaining everything that Graham Poll had to go through last season after he sent off John Terry. Basicallly Terry said Poll changed his story and it took two months for Poll to prove him wrong. All Terry got was a fine.

He said Chelsea appeal against red cards as a matter of course and wondered if that weighed on Riley's mind. Dennnis also pointed out that Cole could have got a second yellow for turning his back on the referee. After all, he'd booked Robbie Keane and Joe Cole for dissent earlier in the game.

Chelsea's mob mentality of disputing decisions is a disgrace. The FA seriously needs to grow a pair and sort them out.

The problem is fining is a waste of time, the only way to stop the hounding of the referee is to dock points & threaten to take away UEFA qualification.

It'll never happen because we don't have a strong FA.

there's an article in The Times Online:

Referee Mike Riley in spotlight over leniency shown to Ashley Cole

An astonishing match at White Hart Lane was not only memorable for eight fantastic goals, but also for the latest horrendous tackle to blight Barclays Premier League football.

Mike Riley, the referee, was making his return to the middle having been rested for last weekend’s Premier League programme after criticism over his handling of the 1-1 draw between Fulham and Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, March 8.

His decision not to send off Ashley Cole, the Chelsea and England left back, for his studs-up lunge at Alan Hutton, the Tottenham Hotspur right back, is again unlikely to endear him to his employers given the climate surrounding dangerous tackles.

Cole’s challenge on a player who had already missed almost a year of football with a broken leg while playing with Rangers demanded a straight red card instead of the yellow leniently presented by Riley.

What was more astonishing was the reaction from some Chelsea players, including John Terry, the captain, in appearing to protest Cole’s innocence as they massed round the official. Nearby Juande Ramos, the Tottenham head coach, came on to the pitch and Avram Grant, the Chelsea first-team coach, appeared to be becalmed by Steve Bennett, the fourth official.

Gustavo Poyet, the Tottenham assistant first-team coach, put his arm around Cole as the players walked down the tunnel and then spoke to Riley as he walked off. Ramos was more restrained after the match. “I just respect the decisions,” he said. “We’ve seen tackles which were much less serious which have earned red cards. We’re just very fortunate that there weren’t any injuries to any players, either Tottenham’s or Chelsea’s.”

Whether Chelsea will find themselves in hot water again with the FA this season remains to be seen. The club were fined £40,000 over the behaviour of their players in the match against Derby County at Pride Park in November. They were also fined £30,000 and warned about their future conduct after being charged with failing to control their players during the 2-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford in September.

“I didn’t see the incident as the assistant referee was in my way,” Grant said. “We need to respect his decision. The referee was two or three metres away.”

Respecting the decision or not, the incident will come under the spotlight in the coming days, especially after the fractured left fibula and dislocated ankle suffered by Eduardo da Silva, the Arsenal forward, after the challenge from Martin Taylor, of Birmingham City, as the spectre of dangerous play returned to the game.

i just fancied using a spoiler for the first time :)

All football fans know he should have got red, even Chavski. The only hope now is that Riley admits a mistake so that Cole gets the suspension he deserves. I can't believe that having decided to show yellow Riley didn't then follow with a second yellow for the dissent - that would actually have been better for football generally than a straight red, since it might just get the message through to teams like Chavski and the Arse, and at least be wary of inflicting outrageous pressure on referees. If I was a ref at grass roots level I'd feel betrayed and be preparing to have to deal with Cashley Hole copycats on Hackney Marshes this weekend. Any refs here on SC bothered by Riley's lack of the necessary bottle to make a stand?

i don't think cole can receive further punishment for his tackle. it was digraceful, but since riley gave a yellow it cannot be classed as missed by the officials and so the FA cannot change that.
a yellow is all he's going to get i'm afraid

I bet Hutton had a moment of panic there thinking it was all about to happen again!

Chelsea's mob mentality of disputing decisions is a disgrace. The FA seriously needs to grow a pair and sort them out.

Couldn't agree more. Refs shouldn't have to deal with it and when little kids see it, they do the same to the people that give up their weekends to go and run around in the pissing rain and referee for them.

I remember one female ref getting so upset by abuse (mostly from halfwit parents) at a game when I was a kid that she left in tears at the end and quit refereeing.

I assumed that the following quote from the Telegraph was relevant, although I admit that I'm not sure it is accurate. If no censure is available retrospectively for Cole, surely Chavski must be fined for their players' behaviour, and it wasn't just Cole behaving disgracefully!

"The FA may study television evidence of the incident, though they are unlikely to consider any form of retrospective action against Cole unless Riley decides that he should have dismissed the England left-back"

Riley threatened to send Cole off if he didn't turn round to him. Yeah, cos that is more serious then nearly breaking someone's leg

Not entirely unrelated but watching the Man U game vs Bolton last night I couldn't believe the amount of times Man U had "homer decisions" in their favour.

Another £30,000 fine - or a week's wages for one of their youth team. :bang:

Fines are pointless in Premiership footy and nothing more than a token gesture from an impotent FA.

Football refs all in all have absolutely no bottle. Bunch of prima dona wimps looking for their five minutes of hanging out with the England captain and such, their chance to be 'friends'. They don't earn players respect and so the players take liberties.

Look at rugby. Usually, the ref has a certain physical presence but also tends to have a strong character. Yes it is a different culture, but that they don't tend to be snivelling little weasels certainly seems to make a difference. Basically they don't take any rubbish.

Grant went down a lot in my estimation last night - sadly he's nothing more than another "I didn't see it" merchant like
Wenger.

Strange how he didn't see the tackle or the Chelsea players (lead by Terry of course) hounding the referee despite it being directly in front of the dug out.

Of course though he saw the Spurs players complaining.........

Ashley Cole is a disgrace on and off the pitch, he's the sort of tosser that gives the impression all footballers are horrid.
From nearly crashing his car when 'only' offered 60K a week at Ar5ena1 or being repeatedly sick whilst commiting adultery with a young girl he's just full of charm.
You then look at the sort of tackle he made last night and the petulant reaction which you would expect from a toddler and I want to run him over at high speed.
He's not even very good - ****

Instead of giving chelsea pitiful 30k fines less than most of their players' weekly wages, they should start threatening to dock a point every time it happens. JT and co would stop doing it within 30 seconds.

I think the chel$ki players knew exactly how bad it was and rushed in there to stop the pathetic Riley from making an instant decision, buy some time & let him cool off a bit. Be interesting to see if Fabio puts him in the england squad after that.

Cashley seems to have set out this season, on and off the pitch, to topple Savage as the most detested player in the league.

Never understood why refs back off when players stride at them like that. Should stand their ground and let the likes of thug Terry walk in to them - then out come the reds.

I am really in a dilemma after all this, for the first time in my sporting life I actually want The Gooners to win this coming week. I have never felt so much disgust against a team for long time. We all know the so called top four have been manipulating referees for some time now, but Chelsea have really got it down to a fine art. The F.A. will do just that, F.A. They only make examples of the weaker teams.
