Napoli have been plotting a midfield signing for some time and the Italian press believe that Tottenham's Moussa Dembele has become one of the prime targets.

Rafa Benitez's side enjoyed a successful season, finishing third and winning the Italian Cup, but they will need to improve if they are to push on next term.

One of the key areas that has room for improvement is Napoli's midfield and the Azzurri have been linked with several names, most notably Lyon captain Maxime Gonalons.

In a protracted transfer saga, Napoli appeared to have Gonalons' signature wrapped up in January, but the deal fell through.

Arsenal have also been tipped to step in for the Frenchman, but Napoli continue to lead the way, although relations between the Italians and Lyon appear to have become tense.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Napoli are focussing their efforts on Gonalons but are also trying to push forward talks for Tottenham man Dembele, who they see as his ideal partner in the middle.

Spurs are said to have already agreed to sell the Belgian international to Napoli, but the player isn't making any decisions until his World Cup campaign is over.

Benitez reportedly wants to have Dembele at his disposal for Napoli's first pre-season session on July 10, unless Belgium are still involved in Brazil, in which case he would welcome Dembele for the trip to Dimaro on July 17.

However, things may become more difficult for Napoli should Dembele impress on the World Cup stage because Tottenham may raise his price and competitors may emerge.

I thought Napoli were interested in Sandro? Remember reading that Roma were quite interested in Dembele. I'm pretty sure that at least one of them will leave this window though.

Also, I think there's something like three Dembele threads now

Definitely want to see how Dembele fairs in Pochettino's system as he is a talented individual and wouldn't want to sell him this summer however it will be quickly apparent if he has a future under Poch or not so I could forsee a January move.

Some big names ARE going to have to go, and I'm happy to see Dembele first on the list.

I wouldn't say "happy", as I still think he's a good player and we do still need squad player. But yes, out of the current crop of CMs he'd be the first I'd let leave.

I won't be too sorry to see Dembele go, as he is a bit of a sick note and there is the fact that his end product is lacking despite his guile.

Have always been a big fan and whilst I'd be intrigued to see what Poch could do with him I'm just not sure anymore. The hip problem and whether he'd be conducive to Poch's style raise question marks.

Suppose you just trust the manager's judgement on this and of course dependent on what offers we'd receive for him.

We definatley need to sell one cm, Capoue, Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho and Bentaleb is too many. Dembele's the one to go for me, he looks good when you see him play but it's flatter to decieve stuff imo

Di Marzio, who many consider a good source, has said Napoli are interested in Dembele & Sandro (though Sandro looks unlikely as they only want to pay half of what we want), so I imagine there is some truth in it. He also says Roma are interested in & Dembele & Paulinho (I would probaby swap both for Pjanic).

I would move heaven and earth for Pjanic. What a player.

I like players that can handle the ball under pressure and be able trust there own ability and Dembele's one of the best in our squad at that. He definitely could be more direct and up the tempo in his game, but for me he has qualities that dont seem to get much acknowledgement or appreciation.

If we're going to sell a[nother] central midfielder this summer, I'd much prefer that Paulinho was ahead of Dembele in the queue to leave WHL. I don't think Paulinho is as good a player as Dembele is, and I also think we'd get more money from selling Paulinho than we would selling Dembele.

No-brainer for me: better player stays and we get more money for selling the player that the market [wrongly, IMO] values more highly. Moneyball rules. (However I do appreciate that bringing up Paulinho in a Dembele transfer thread is a tad tangential.)

I agree. But its also what's so frustrating about him at times. Every so often he'll really drive forward and take a few players out of the game but its becoming less and less.

Its like he has these insane attributes that allow him to hold and carry the ball without losing it but doesn't have the appetite to use them in a way that would truly hurt the opposition on a more regular basis.

If Dembele played with a lot more urgency he'd be at a bigger Club than ours. I'm not sure if he could instinctively pass and move quicker in the way we'd like to see him do but his ability to hold on to the ball is quite remarkable.

Maybe this hip problem really has restricted him.

I think this is certainly where the "Poch evaluating the squad first" comes in. Paulinho and Dembele will most certainly be on the hot seat, as between them, Holtby, a very promising 19 year old at the position, and players Poch may be having his eye on to more effectively execute his game plan, I think it'll frankly be the most carefully scrutinized position in training camp.

People say Paulinho is bad (I disagree) but he's still done more in one season than Dembele has done in 2. I'm not saying Dembele is a bad player, I just think he is the midfielder we should sell if that's what we want to do.

IMO, we shouldn't sell any midfielders unless we are getting a truly creative player.

I think we should sell one between Paulinho and Dembele anyway. Can't keep everyone happy and develop Bentaleb otherwise.

Your right he does need to improve some parts of his game, but most of our players do.
But even in a defensive sense it's great to be able to roll the ball into someone when you're getting pressurised high up and be confidant they can look after it. defensively Dembele adds a lot to the side, with and without the ball.
