Clint Dempsey, the U.S. national team captain who has spent the past several seasons scoring regularly in England, is on his way to the Seattle Sounders. The stunning transfer immediately will become one of the most significant transactions in Major League Soccer history when it is announced on Saturday.
SI.com has confirmed the move, which first was reported by ESPN on Friday evening.
Dempsey, 30, was rumored to be on the way out at Tottenham Hotspur following a 2012-13 season in which he failed to start consistently under coach André Villas-Boas. But no one expected a return to MLS, especially for an athlete in his prime who'd been so vocal about his desire to play for a high-level club competing for a berth in the UEFA Champions League.
Hints began to surface on Thursday, when Fox Soccer analyst Keith Costigan revealed on Twitter that the Sounders were "interested" in Dempsey. Later that day, the player was photographed at the airport in San Francisco. Tottenham, which is preparing for the 2013-14 English Premier League season, is scheduled to play an exhibition in Monaco on Saturday.
Following ESPN's report, SI.com learned from a source with direct knowledge of the Sounders' plans that Dempsey will be in attendance at the club's MLS match against FC Dallas on Saturday night. He is expected to be formally presented to the media on Monday. He had two seasons left on his contract with Tottenham, which reportedly paid around $10 million to acquire him from London rival Fulham last summer. Friday reports out of Seattle suggested that the Sounders paid some $9 million for Dempsey's rights.

I think the signing of Clint Dempsey is a real signal that the MLS is attempting to become more than just a retirement home for top players.

Talisman on the home front.

Good luck Clint.

Didn't like him at Spurs, though he scored some clutch goals.

If the transfer goes through as expected, can Clint return to Tottenham on loan in January?
It is MLS offseason and Dempsey will need to keep himself fit for the upcoming World Cup.

I would welcome him back.

I imagine he'll go on loan somewhere when the MLS season ends in December. He's not going to want to sit around and not play from December through March during a World Cup year.

Well, maybe he would take that time off to re-charge his batteries, pick up in March, and be ready to go by the summer.

as far as I'm concerned, he's just not good enough for the team we're trying to be. 7 league goals are blinding people to what are really obvious limitations. I can understand if he had some rare quality that no-one else could replace, but that's clearly not the case.

He does have a quality not many players have, certainly no one in our squad. He gets into the right place at the right time and scores goals, something that can't really be taught!

You made this as a post previously:
"Paulinho has been deadly at Confederations. I hope this happens."

why would you be happy that paulinho was joining us if you weren't a spurs supporter? And better yet why are you on a spurs discussion forum?

Good luck to him- whatever some on here think of him he chipped in with some very memorable moments for us :)

Well said !

Not the most fluent player to watch but he knows exactly where the net is and has no fear of playing anyone. Sure he will be a stand out star in the MLS.

Wasn't the biggest Dempsey fan last season. But to be fair he did score some important goals for us. In someways I'm actually disappointed as would been interesting to see how he did this season having had a full pre season behind him. Looking at fee though can understand why we sold him.
