I believe Beckham did for Madrid, in a short amount of time, but that was a different commercial paradigm to what exists now

Well, "Allegedly". There are many articles debunking such claims though:

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...t-shirt-sales-world-record-198m-a7874731.html

But anyway it's irrelevant. I know what @synththfc was getting at.

And the club gets barely any money from shirt sales anyway.
I'd only quibble with this aspect of your post - the contracts that teams sign with shirt manufacturers are directly proportional to the number of shirts they expect to sell. So yes, within the confines of the existing shirt contract, the team gets paid up front, and not on an on-going per shirt basis (though I am sure there are bonuses for hitting certain volumes).

But, if a team can improve the overall number of shirts sold - then the next shirt contract will reflect that new sales figure.

I so agree that you only sign a player if he can help you on the pitch. I happen to think Pulisic is such a player.

And, I know a lot of band-wagon fans, who are not true supporters of their current club, and would jump on the Pulisic bandwagon easily - specifically most of the current Dortmund fans...

I know what you're saying, but that never happens. No club makes back a transfer fee on shirt sales.

that's not what he said though is it? I saw some stuff from the Club while working in Seoul a few years back- it might surprise you how we could profit beyond selling kits.

He said we could make the transfer fee back within months.

United sell about 3m shirts a year in total. I doubt a £50m player will sell enough shirts to make back his transfer fee. He'll sell a lot of shirts, but the vast majority of those buyers aren't getting a second shirt with someone else's name.

I don’t really rate him but football is now bigger than baseball in America. Think it’s their third biggest sport not too far behind basketball with NFL miles ahead. Don’t think shirt sales are the only commercial aspect at play here.

Even if we bought Croatia’s entire midfield there would be moaning after 48 hours for more signings.

I loved the Arnesen summer with one signing every day, mental. Didn't matter if it was Spase Dilevski, still gave me a kick.

You don't make the money back on shirt sales, you make it back on second tier sponsors who want to associate with the team due to the star player and also on the fees you can charge for pre and post season friendlies.

Real Madrid learned this lesson when they sold Beckham, they were shocked at how much income they lost from him leaving, hence why they then paid a world record fee for Ronaldo.

The Goat hears that we're preparing a formal bid and that he has some contract clauses that are in our favour.

Pulisic is an out and out attacking mid as far as I'm aware. If we're showing concrete interest then that'll be Pulisic, Dele, Eriksen, Son, Lucas, Lamela. Considering Lucas could barely get a game, we must be changing formation next season surely?

Agree, I don't fully understand it. Signing would have made a lot of sense for the 4-2-3-1 without Lucas but we have him so its confusing.. I guess we're just going to have Lucas, Son, Kane, Lamela and Pulisic rotate as the 3 up top in a 4-3-3? That would be more than sufficient depth.
