Struggling Rovers look to move off the bottom as they host Spurs

Bottom club Blackburn Rovers host Tottenham Hotspur looking to claim only their second league win of the season.

Spurs, in stark contrast, are undefeated in their last five and victory could see them move as high as fourth.

Under-fire Rovers boss Steve Kean has again had the backing of owners and players in the last week as the club's supporters plan a third protest before the match at Ewood Park on Sunday.

Kean's men grabbed a hard-earned point last time out at Queens Park Rangers and they will be hoping they can push on from there.
Team news

Blackburn could very well remain unchanged from the team which drew at QPR.

Ryan Nelsen remains sidelined, so Scott Dann and Chris Samba will continue their partnership at the heart of the defence.

In attack, Kean could tinker with his options, as both David Goodwillie and Ruben Rochina are pushing for recalls.

For Spurs, Scott Parker, Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart will be
recalled after being rested for the Europa League win over Rubin Kazan.

Manager Harry Redknapp has major problems in defence, with William Gallas
(calf), Michael Dawson (Achilles), Ledley King (groin) and Vedran Corluka (foot) all unavailable so Sebastian Bassong is likely to partner Younes Kaboul.

Aaron Lennon and Sandro but both came through 70 minutes of the Rubin clash but Tom Huddlestone remains sidelined with a long-term ankle injury.

Blackburn's Michel Salgado is out with a hamstring injury, so Jason Lowe is set to deputise at right-back.

Lowe's place in midfield may go to the fit-again Morten Gamst Pedersen, but David Dunn, Ryan Nelsen and Vince Grella remain sidelined.

Tottenham have problems in defence with the quartet of Vedran Corluka, Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Ledley King all out injured.

Aaron Lennon and Sandro played in miweek and should be available.

At the risk of upsetting the Spurs supporters, the focus on this weekend's game will be almost entirely on Blackburn Rovers.

While Harry Redknapp picked up his seventh manager of the month award having steered Tottenham serenely to an unbeaten five-match run, Steve Kean has had to endure barracking from a vociferous group of Rovers fans who have demanded his departure.

To compound matters, a three-match winless run has now seen Blackburn fall to the bottom of the table and more protests are planned both before and after Sunday's game regardless of the outcome. The club owners though have remained consistent throughout and have once again reiterated their support for the man they only appointed 10 months ago.

Interestingly, this all mirrors the situation just over a month ago when Arsenal were the visitors. Rovers were bottom, protesters vented their fury but the players responded with their best performance of the campaign, twice coming from behind to register their only Premier League win so far.

It was, in many ways, a show of unity amidst a backdrop of disquiet and that spirit has again been echoed this week by Kean's newest recruit Yakubu, who believes that the entire dressing room is behind their leader. And that solidarity will have to be prevalent as they face one of the in-form sides in the division.

Only an 86th-minute equaliser by Newcastle denied Spurs their fifth successive league win, a run which has seen them score 12 times, with Rafael van der Vaart, Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor all hitting three each.

It's an ominous sign for a Blackburn defence which hasn't kept a clean sheet since April and for a team who've only beaten Spurs twice in their last 15 meetings.

Head-to-head

  • Tottenham have done the double over Blackburn in each of the last two seasons.
  • This is the 108th meeting between the sides. Tottenham have won 48 matches, Blackburn 36 and there have been 23 draws.
Blackburn

  • David Goodwille is still without a shot on target in six Premier League appearances.
  • Goalkeeper Paul Robinson has let in 18 goals (the second highest in the league) and has made just 19 saves so far this season.
  • Blackburn have failed to win any of the last five matches in which Christopher Samba has scored.
Tottenham

  • Five of Jermain Defoe's last seven league goals have come from outside the penalty area.
  • Only the two Manchester clubs have stopped Tottenham scoring in their last 15 league games.
  • Rafael van der Vaart has scored Tottenham's opening goal in their last three matches. He has an impressive strike rate of a goal every 166 minutes in the league for Tottenham.

Whether we go 4-2-3-1, 4-4-1-1 or 4-3-3, is anyone's guess. I'd like to see Modric given license to come inside if he starts wide.

Problem though is Modric & VDV both influence the game much better from central areas, but it's difficult to leave Parker or Sandro out.

What do you do Harry ?

Modric needs to be central, preferably in a more advance role so he can dictate play in Blackburn's third.

He is comfortable on either foot and can spread play quicker than VdV, whilst I feel VdV is better cutting in from slightly wide right in that he shouldn't be picked up as easily and more likely to find space than plonked right in the middle but in any case, Bale, Modric and Rafa should all have licence to roam as such ahead of a strong defensive base of Sandro and Parker.

Six points on offer for this match then?

There are 2 types of must-win games. There are those which must be won in order to stay in touch with your rivals, and those which must be won because anything other than a win is a poor result when you consider the quality/form of the opposition.

This is the latter. Come on Spurs!

We should cause them plenty og problems on the ball so the only thing which concerns me is our defense with Bassong starting, and Walker up against Hoilett with little protection. Therefore its important Modric and Parker in particular have a good game to ensure we control the tempo and have lots of possession in their half.

Its stats like these that always scare me:

Blackburn to beat us 2-0 with Goodwillie and Samba scoring? Eek
