Where would people on here put BAE into the discussion?

He was a mainstay at left back for four seasons, including a CL qualification during that time.

Tbh, though, I never really remember him being all that good; not shocking, or anything, but a player that would never start for an 'elite' club.

Best worst player?

Beni was a ledge. Certainly wasn't crap in any way whatsoever.

Turned out to be mad as a box of frogs, but he was a good footballer.

Bit controversial, but best worst player...Niko Kranjčar.

Very skillful player, but if I remember correctly Harry used to play him out wide, where Niko was hampered by his lack of pace.

I think if he had have been a main-stay at number 10 with a 'free-role' he'd have been remembered as one of the best players during that period. But instead, we got a technically gifted 'winger' who couldn't beat his man because he had all the speed of a Soviet-era Skoda. Of course it didn't help that VDV was playing number 10 for at least one of those season in this era.

Worst best players...we've had a few of those. Sean Davies, Michael Brown, Pedro Mendes, Sissoko, possibly even Wilson Palacios were all fairly limited players, but definitely brought something to the table, namely workrate and steel. I think someone like Kevin Wimmer might be in there as well, because he had a run in the team during the 15/16 season and was pretty decent. His form then dropped and he left for Stoke and faded into obscurity because of a lack of natural talent.
Re. Wimmer

That run he had was great, we called him "Vertonghen in a fat suit"

Was instrumental in helping Sonny settle in, and I'm sure we owe Wimmer a lot for convincing Son to stay (he wanted to leave at the end of that season, IIRC)

Lots of stories of him enjoying the London lifestyle over having a football career.
99/00 he and Armstrong, two ordinary players, each bagged 14 in the league almost all of the back of Ginola’s playmaking. For context, in a far better side Berbatov and Keane’s beat together was 15 each.

Then we went and sold Ginola ?

Nothing crap about Ekotto, our best left back of the PL era.

Maybe, like I say they were just stories.

Iversen and Armstrong both had some ability but no doubt their Spurs careers weren't about longevity.

Oh I’ve heard the stories too, certainly wasn’t disagreeing with you, just remembering back to a time long since gone.

Imagine passing up Denis Bergkamp, who declared himself a Spurs fan, and wanted to come, because you'd rather sign Chris Armstrong...

*smh*

All because he didn’t trust foreign players after Klinsmann traded in our mid table mediocrity to sign for by far the biggest club in his homeland.

We were looking at Maradona and Zidane around that time as well.

Maradona, Zidane, Klinsmann and Bergkamp; that would have to be the most 'Galactico' PL team ever!

And managed by Gerry Francis*:LOL::LOL:

*Okay, probably not, as with that lot Ossie would probably have kept his job.

Agreed with all of these, except I'd swap Paulinho and Pavlyuchenko round in those lists. Paulinho was a bloody awful footballer but somehow managed to start for Brazil and win the double with Barcelona. Whereas if you watched a highlights real of Pav's best goals you'd think he was the second coming of Van Basten, but he was usually piss poor over 90 minutes and was never consistent enough to really hold down a first team place here.
I should qualify my inclusion of Pav in the Best Worst Players list. He scored some absolute bangers and was a proper character but had zero consistency (probably through lack of opportunity), rather than being a bad player. Paulinho, for us, will always be a Worst Best Player - he came in with such hype and a big price tag (for us at the time) but was utter dogshit for the most part ?

This always gets attributed to us, and its incorrect. It was Blackburn that he was offered to, to which Kenny Dalglish famously replied "why would I sign Zidane when I have Tim Sherwood?"

Okay another one...Ian Walker.

I just mentioned him in the legends thread due to his number of caps for us.

I seem to remember that he was quite highly rated and had 4 caps for England, but I'm not sure if he was all that good.

The guys in front of him at that time weren't up to much, so perhaps he was a decent keeper with a useless defence to organise.

I can't really remember to be honest, but he was a bit of an icon of 90s football; flash git, silly haircut, like to party and married to a page 3 girl.

Anyway, was he a greatest worst player, or worst greatest player?

Or neither?

I would say that it's not 100% confirmed either way :)

The way the Sun frames Zidane's comments aren't exactly conclusive:

Definitely still in myth territory though.

Best Bad player : Atouba - gold booted left back with more step overs than Cristiano Ronaldo, no-one including himself knew what he was going to do next, it was utter madness but hilarious and brilliant at the same time.

Worst good player : Judas.

Best bad: Stalteri. For that winner against WH alone!

Worst good: Eriksen, towards the end.
