Just noticed the Asian Cup is going on Down Under.
Usual suspects - Japan,China, S Korea, Oz, Iran - doing well.
But I also noticed that footballing powerhouse and 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar are there. Or rather they were.
They managed to finish bottom of their group - played 3, lost 3 - behind those other giants of world football, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
And this is the country who "deserved" to host a World Cup!
Having bribed FIFA executives to "win" the right to host the '22 event, it looks like they're going to have to do the same to their opponents if they're going to get any points in their Group Stage.

I don't think the fact that they aren't a footballing powerhouse should be held against them when looking to host a World Cup.

Bribery and corruption on the other hand...

come 2022 you might find Qatar have assimilated a number of better East African players much as the UAE team already has, and they're currently leading Japan 1-0 in the last QF.

I started following the action yesterday, when the South Koreans squeezed past the Uzbeks 2-0 AET. Son Heung-min got both, still might pop up in the Prem one day, maybe even with us? Follow them since I lived there and have seen them play live several times.

Also follow China since I now live there but their good run came to a halt last night at the hands of the Aussie hosts, Cahill scored an overhead kick and a trademark header, really is a ledge for them.

Todays earlier QF was a good un, Iran Iraq derby, finished 3 all with the Iraqis finally prevailing in the shoot out. Had a constant feeling it was going to go off (on the pitch) with some wild challenges going in!

Fingers crossed for the Taegeuk Warriors to win the whole thing, they play Iraq in the semis... and then hopefully either Aussie or Japan in the final. Dae Han Min Gook!

Is Humam Tariq as good as Football Manager makes him out to be?

Forgetting the controversy, would you be against Qatar hosting it just because their national team is shit? You have to remember, countries are not their national team, there is more to a country than that and FIFA don't just judge a country on their team. They would have been deemed to have "deserved" to host it based on something else.

Every country was bribing it's just that they paid more than the others.

I agree. But I do think there should be a certain amount of footballing infrastructure in place. Take your home nation, they revamped their football around a decade ago and it's bigger than its ever been. I just don't see what Qatar brings to the table bar greased palms of course.

Actually, I'm including that in the collective controversy, because let's face it, there were questions all over Qatar's ability to host, the second their name was shown on that card. In fairness, no first time country is 100% ready to host a world cup when they're announced, but they're at least be 10% ready, whereas I'm fairly confident that Qatar was sitting on roughly 0%. So I agree, there should be some sort of minimum starting infrastructure. Obviously the idea is they will have the infrastructure in place, however media reports indicate that in doing so, they are well on pace to kill 4000 Nepalese migrant workers, about 1 every two days at the moment. This is going to be the cost of rushing the job, a job that unfortunately needs to be rushed, if Qatar are to have any hope of being ready on time. This World Cup will have its costs, like no other before it.

One reason alone to not grant them the tournament, FIFA proving they have no human affection.

The Iran-Iraq game was one of the best I've ever seen in the Asian Cup.

And in all likelihood it will probably be the best World Cup ever with the amount of money they will throw at it.
