I'm sorry but Townsend is defo one of the guys we need to keep. The guy is Tottenham through and through and so probably happy to be roughly second choice to a guy like Lamela and is homegrown by the club, which we don't have many of in the senior team, and you need clubgrown players for Europa League registration.

Sell Lennon instead. He'll go for the same amount.

I'd love to call BS but I could see our club paying £12m for lallana and giving them a talented youngster who just needs a bit of coaching.
You can guarantee lallana's career would nosedive ala Bentley and then Real Madrid would pay £100m for Townsend after he'd scored 30 goals for the third consecutive season and fired Soton into the top four....

Pity we didn't sell him when he had that little purple patch for England and he was getting hugely overhyped, but if we can still find clubs interested then for sure. To me he's always been much the same, lots of pace, little brain, little vision and far too much selfishness in his game. He'll only ever be a cover player for us at best so if we can get a reasonable price then better for both him and the club

I think he has a better chance than you're affording him, and I single you out since I tend to agree with your player assessments a lot. He made the mental leap to glory far too early, and it has severely affected his game since the England stints as a result.

Given what we're paying him, his youth, his ambidextrous feet, his ability to play both sides at least decently well, his pace, his athleticism, his being an Englishman (getting low on HG's), and Spurs through his heart, there is just no reason to sell this kid and every reason to invest the time in hope that he'll humble himself and get the mental components of his game down. I think he can be a real contributor for Spurs next season along with Lamela on the right wing, and I look forward to seeing what they can do.

I think the worst thing that has happened to him was that purple patch he had for England. He'd played a number of odd games for us where all he ever showed was pace and energy, but he did at least look to be trying to be a team player, tried to put crosses and passes in even if he was never a "head up" player

Since scoring those goals for England as an inverted rw he has constantly been far too greedy on the ball, trying to take on too many players on a run and shooting from all kinds of distances high and wide regardless of other players making runs and getting in better positions.Even playing lw he still tends to be greedy and attempts to work in shots rather than look for team mates

Had he not had that hype I think he would have been fighting harder to earn a place in the team and more prepared to work on his approach play and final ball-and for that matter his covering and tackling back to protect his defender. Now I see a player with an over inflated opinion of himself that seems to think he should be playing regularly and I feel pretty convinced he feels he should be afforded the kind of freer role that Bale had without any defensive responsibilities

He might finally conclude that he really has to earn his place and work on developing the weaknesses in his game to do that, but to do that he really needs to be playing regularly and for me he's not good enough, certainly at this point. He could be loaned out but he has had a number of loans so might not feel he should need to prove himself anymore. So I really think he needs to move to a lower level PL club both to give him more playing time with less expectation and to maybe us selling him would also serve as a wake up call that he hasn't really done anything yet and needs to develop. I just think he isn't going to develop if he stays around so I'll be happy to sell for a decent price while he still has a bit of hype surrounding him. He may develop in a couple of seasons at another club but I don't think he'll develop if we keep him so I don't think we'll be missing out
I could be proven wrong and I hope if he stays he develops into a fine player for us but I think that little purple patch has done his development more harm than good

I agree with a lot of this, but we could hardly do better than Lamela and Townsend on the right with the latter providing cover on the left. It's a long season with many fronts and they play a position that gets injured more often than most due to lactic acid accumulation, they would both see more than enough playing time. The real task though, would be selling Lennon who no longer contributes much and is hampering te development of two potentially solid young players.

I disagree on Lennon, I think our lack of a deeper lying playmaker has reduced the service he has gotten. Lots of times I've seen him make runs only for players to fail in playing the pass or simply not play the pass soon enough.

I actually think he has worked on slowing his runs ahead of delivery to enable him to better look up for passing options, but has seen far less of the ball to make this more telling.

Also our lack of a defensively strong or astute rb has meant he has spent a lot more time trying to help out defensively. Unless we were to get a defensively strong RB then I think the option of either Lamela or Townsend would pretty much leave the RB with no protection and whilst there will be games where that might not matter too much there's bound to be a number where it's important, so for me I'd rather have Lamela and Lennon as the and if I was going to keep Townsend I'd have him as a left winger anyway, in an effort to get him using his pace to get to the bye line behind defenders and hopefully improve his delivery, rather than cutting inside and changing into Frank Saul's shooting boots on every occasion. Then hope to get a quality first choice aml who had enough in his game to provide some full back protection for the LB (another defensive weakness)
I wouldn't be against keeping Townsend as a cover on the left, but I get the feeling he'll be pushing for a regular place and I don't think he offers enough for that at least not at this stage and I also think that we might get a better offer now than later
Time will tell I guess

One fluke goal and no assists. Unless he has been carrying an injury he is just a fast player with little else to offer

I still believe that with the right coaching, Townsend has the attributes to be a great player. He's a great dribbler, has 2 good feet, a decent cross and a good shot. The problem is he picks the wrong option too often, and takes too many long shots. Get the right coach and he'll come good very quickly.

Actually, Townsend's shooting from the right has provided an optical illusion. He's actually far less predictable out right because defenders assumed he was cutting in and he began using it to his advantage to cut back towards the end line. On the left, just about all he does is go toward the end line. If he cuts back inside on the left, he just dishes it to one of the center mids who in true fashion continue passing horizontally.

I like the point about Lennon, and I think you're partially right, but for me he's taken on too many dribbles this season that have ended in him losing the ball by the second man. Far too many of them. This is far too often when he gets the ball, and if he gets the ball. He is even more of a passenger than Paulinho in most games. Not the worst player on the squad, but he'll be impeding solid, young winger talent by remaining on the right side.
