Analyzing Our Net Spend Going Into Deadline Day

In all of the discussion in the media about our spending spree over the course of the last few months, very little has actually been made of the fact that our incoming transfer fees have been completely covered by the sales of our players. It's a complete false equivalency to compare our spending this window to the likes of Manchester City, PSG, Monaco, and Chelsea, as they've engaged in deficit spending that has not been offset by sales. Even the likes of Cardiff and Southampton have spent significantly more than us, on a net basis.

Here is a rough estimate of our business so far:

Out
Huddlestone: 5 million
Parker: 3 million
Dempsey: 6 million
Caulker: 9 million
Bale: 85 million

Total: 108 million

In
Soldado: 26 million
Lamela: 26 million
Paulinho: 17 million
Eriksen: 10 million
Capoue: 9 million
Chiriches: 8 million
Chadli: 7 million

Total In: 103 million

There are two takeaways from the above. Firstly, it needs to be said that Levy and Baldini have done exceptionally well to bring in the quality and quantity that they have. However, even more importantly, we've be able to sell fringe players for very good prices, and of course the Bale sale is a world record, and an incredibly impressive sum by itself.

Secondly, we should have significant resources to spend tomorrow if there are targets available. We were prepared to spend 30 million pounds on Willian, which would have been 20 million more than what we paid for Eriksen (who will be the signing of the summer for us, in my opinion). That's not even considering the potential sales of Adebayor, BAE, Sigurdsson, and others. Now, there may be a segment of supporters here who think that bringing in any more new faces would be too destabilizing and it'd be better for us to just stand pat tomorrow and play out the season with our current team. However, I'd argue that there still are still weaknesses in our squad, namely at left-back, and in the back-up striker position. When you consider injuries and the fact that we do have the money to spend, I expect us to be very active in seeking out deals tomorrow. Waiting until January, where prices will be even more outrageous, doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

So what do people think here? Would you be satisfied with no transfer activity tomorrow, and comfortable with just having two strikers (in the event Adebayor is sold), or even potentially welcoming Adebayor and BAE back into the squad? Or would you continue to be aggressive and net spend to fill in any gaps in the current starting XI?

i'd be happy to have benny and ade back in the team, problem is avb doesn't agree. if we spend, we spend, i just hope we don't spend for the sake of it and waste more money.

I think the Buy no more destabilizing argument is mute, the whole face of the team has changed.

This is a new team. As you have so eloquently illustrated above we have a -£5m net spend so I fully expect more fireworks tomorrow. Apart from anything else we definitely need a big as in size not fee striker just for a plan b. Something we needed today to counter arsenal's deep line.

I actually think Adebayor is still the best striker we've got to play in a 4-3-3

He can hold the ball up.

The main problem with him is he really just can't be bothered.
Yes, was going to edit that in but for some reason my edit function isn't working. When he wants to he is unplayable and better than Soldado easily. That Chelsea performance last season was one of the best displays I've ever seen from a striker. Sadly that was 1/38.

That's nonsense. Adebayor is very good technically and good with his feet. The main problem with him is he drifts out wide too much.

The problem isn't on the pitch as far as I can tell. But standards are important. Simple implementation of standards will see Di Canio take a sh*tbag team like Sunderland into or around the top 10 this year.

Our net spend was very high unitl we sold Bale.

Can´t blame the media for comparing our spnding to the other big clubs as we were sying that w didn´t want to sell him.

We´ve sold some fringe players for good prices. Not sure if we should buy one and sell one striker.

Happy to give our full backs a season. I´d be perfectly happy at no incomings on deadline day.

Sunderland aren't good enough for top 10 even if Di Canio implements standards. They just don't have the talent.

It is an interesting point though, for all the "spending" we've supposedly done, at the same time we actually made money and cut the wage bill this window...plus there's the Lewis 50m interest free loan rumour, so who knows, maybe there is 1 or 2 more to come and we will have actually "spent."

We need to buy more, Benteke and a LB (Contrao isnt leaving RM).

I know I have to give Soldado time to acclimatize to the EPL, but going by the games thus far, he seems like a copy of Jermain Defoe.

The 3 weakest positions in our team is left back right back left forward. We have 24 hours to address that

AVB is trying to go the Barca way.

And I will add that Chadli @ £7million doesnt look like a good buy. One thing you need as a top EPL winger is pace, and he doesnt have any. Nani @ £8million would have been a better buy.
