A New Striker in January

Let me begin this post by heralding Daniel Levy for completing what I thought was a longshot deal for Emmanuel Adebayor. It was a masterstroke that arguably has us as favorites to return to the Champions League next season. Adebayor has seamlessly fit into our side and our ability to go forward against Liverpool was nothing short of stunning.

However, with the physicality of the EPL, the one thing that could derail our top 4 ambitions is an injury to our Togolese superstar up front. With Crouch having been sold, and Defoe not able to lead the line, our only back-up is apparently Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Thus far this season, Pav has been utterly dreadful. He was poor against Hearts, terrible against PAOK, and apparently, even worse tonight versus Stoke. This isn't about the penalty miss, either. It's about the totality of his game, and the lack of passing ability, link up play, and general fire to inspire us up front. We simply cannot rely on him as cover for Adebayor.

With minimal investment in the past few transfer windows, and with a good amount of cash coming in from the sale of Crouch and Palacios, surely we will be bold and bring in another striker in January? My preference would be for someone in the mold of either Leandro or Papiss Cisse, who could actually play with Adebayor for stretches, or on their own up front leading the line. Huntelaar would also be excellent cover at a decent price.

I think in the end, it's imperative we bring in another striker in January. We can thrive until then, because our schedule isn't that difficult, but we faded late last year due to injuries and a lack of goals as the going got tough. I think this side has the talent to put us into pole position going into January, but we could potentially use a bit of a "freshening up" then as Harry would put it.

The nice thing is, I think given Harry's comments in the past about Pav, he isn't likely to back him for a contract extension, and would potentially want an upgrade in January too. Hopefully he'll be less cautious than last year, and sanction a move for an upgrade.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that bringing in another striker in January would also be a hedge against Adebayor leaving next summer. We may need to replace him anyhow, so why not secure someone like Leandro to help us push on now, and perhaps go back in for a Rossi-type once we return to the Champions League.

I really think we will sign a striker on a permanent deal in January, simply because I don't think we'll be able to sign Adebayor in Summer leaving us with just Pav and Defoe. One of those two are more than likely to leave soon (hopefully Pav), leaving us with just 1 striker. I'd imagine 1 in January on a long-term deal, and then another in the Summer when Pavlyuchenko leaves.

I actually think for some games we might get away with Defoe and VDV buzzing around behind him. I know its far from ideal but Defoe looks stronger and sharper...he even got the better of Skrtel with a high ball on Sunday!

But yes point taken we need somebody ready to come in for Ade when needs be.

I hope we have made some solid moves for Leandro, assuming the price isn't too extortionate, he seems like a player who is still a little raw but can come in and get goals, and will develop.

I'd try to get that sorted asap as his profile is on the up, and then once that deal is wrapped up see who wants Pav.

From recent reports, it seems that might be the case, and if last January's anything to go by anyone half-decent (or even pretty crap, in the case of Carroll) is going to cost a bomb.

Listen, lets not get carried away with Defoe either. For the last couple of years Defoe has offered not much more in terms of goals pm, and even less in terms of team play. He's looked bright eyed and bushy tailed in the last couple of games, but we've all seen this from Defoe before, it rarely lasts longer than a few games or an England call up.

Pav is limp biscuit, but I won't be sorry to see Defoe upgraded either.

We have 4 strikers right now:
Ade- Loan, it is unlikely that he will sign for Tottenham this summer. He is after his last big contract
Pav - Has 20 months on his contract, looks like he isn't good enough, if he isn't sold soon won't get anything for him. He will be 30 soon. I guess we could get 4 mil for him.
Gio- Has 20 months on his contact. Udinesse offered 9 mil for him this summer because they had money from Sanchez sale. If he was sold in January 5-7 mil IMO.
Defoe- not bad, also homegrown - Stays

So in summer it is quite likely that we will only have Defoe and around 10 mil from Gio and Pav sale. Ideally I would like someone like Ade ( Damiao?, but he would cost around 25 mil) and some upgrade on Defoe( someone like Aguero).

Pav out in jan, K Jones in from Stoke....Leandro doesn't sound like a back to goal striker at all...

By the sounds of it we've been in talks with them for ages and already have good relations with them - after all aren't Internacional our feeder club? Wouldn't even be surprised if the player would turn down a couple of bigger moves to come and play with his old mate Sandro.

I think our chances of signing Leandro would be pretty good, but we'd be left with a new headache after hes knackered from playing a full Brazilian season.

Inter isn't Tottenham's feeder club. They are partners.
Play with friend for 35k, or play CL for 65k? What will he choose.

Levy will have to pay alot for this one(or anyone else worth buying).

My mistake about them being feeder club then - but even so we're probably more likely to strike a deal with our 'partners' than alot of other clubs.

As for the wages, I'm not quite sure where you got those figures from, but with all the players who left the wage bill this summer, I'm sure we can muster up more than 35k.

I think everyone will agree Leandro wouldn't be a bargain buy, but given some of the figures thrown about last Jan TW, and the extra funds from the sales of the deadwood, Levy might be prepared to whip out the chequebook for a new striker.
