Never mind the away games we dropped points in.

Had we beaten Chelsea, Villa and West Ham at home....like we should of, we'd be in the title race.
You could argue however that we were a bit fortunate to beat Sheffield United, Liverpool, Everton and Brighton at home. Easy to rue the missed chances but we've had our fair share of successes.

It doesn't work like that - a ten point gap to a team chasing the title is far bigger than a ten point gap to a team chasing top four, which is also bigger than a ten point gap to survive relegation. Reason being - a title chasing team is far less likely to drop the points you need to make up the gap.

You might get the odd title chaser who completely implodes at the end of the season like Arsenal did last season, but that happens once in a blue moon (no pun intended). You're not going to have three teams simultaneously collapse whilst a team that can't keep clean sheets and hasn't won more than three in a row go on a miracle run of form during their toughest run of fixtures of the season. Whereas you might get a team with a history of Spursiness dropping points in a series of hard games that they usually drop points in whilst another big six team wins five games against teams in the bottom half.

I agree with most of this, but I think possibly you are underestimating how difficult it is for even a top six team to make up an eleven point gap to a team above them with so few games left.

In 21/22 we infamously beat Arsenal to fourth, but look back and by this stage of the season we were already level with them. I think the biggest the gap ever got was about 5 points when they had played 19 and us 17. But it still felt like we had to be super consistent to make that gap up.

Wolves is the one for me. How we threw that away after we'd scored and had the momentum to lose at home was ridiculous - you'd have thought we'd have a point to prove against them after letting in two goals in the last minute in the away game.

I expected us to be inconsistent this season but it's been so infuriating how shit we've been at times when we've also been so brilliant to watch in certain spells...

Villa have won once in their last five league matches, and lost twice.

We have won three of our last five, and lost once.

We have good reason to be confident about beating them to fourth, especially with the extra game and superior goal difference.

Villa arguably have a slightly easier run in, but then again our last two matches could be against teams already relegated.

Last 16/17 games - since we had that appalling run due to injuries/suspensions.

Our form
Played = 16
Won = 10
Draw = 3
Lost = 3
Pts = 33

Villa's form
Played = 17
Won = 7
Draw = 4
Lost = 6
Pts = 25

It's not like Villa have just dropped points in tough fixtures either, they lost to Man Utd twice and Newcastle (h).
Drew with West Ham, Brentford (h), Sheff Utd.

Absolutely.

But to be honest, we deserved to beat SU and Brighton.

Liverpool we still may of won regardless.

Everton we definitely got away with.

Isn’t it more likely that it will be easier to play the relegated teams.

Their players will be emotionally drained and thinking about their next move or summer holidays.

I'm pretty sure statistically speaking, there's no change overall in the form of teams once relegation is confirmed. They continue to be equally as bad as they always were. Potentially this is different factors offsetting each other e.g. pressure lifted vs lack of motivation.

Yeah it's a good point.

There have been a lot of games where we didn't play brilliantly but you could easily say we still deserved to win.

Which really bodes well for the future.

If we had been getting away with it week after week (like United) you'd worry cause you know its just papering over the cracks

Dude shit.

This has been our season excluding 3 months of hell with half a team out.

Yeah that’s what I meant. It should be easier to play against them. Firstly, they’re bottom of the league for a reason and secondly for the reasons you have stated. There are arguments about them playing with no pressure etc and there are exceptions like when we were thrashed by Newcastle but I still think all things considered two relegated teams as the two final matches of the season is about as good as you could ask for.

We have to take something from the Newcastle game, ideally a win. Villa will play twice before we kick off in the NLD.

Realistically I can see them being on 35 games played with 66 points, that would put us on 32 games hopefully 63 points going into the NLD, we need to keep within one result to keep the pressure on, knowing we have games in hand. Tough games but still, at least its in our control and not relying on others.

W 3. D. 2. L.. 2
11 pts gives us 71pts. That should be enough. We have 4 very winnable games plus the top 3
Villa would need 12pts from 6.

hopefully we have 4th in the bag by then .. hint hint.
It's disgraceful you're suggesting we should take it easy. I'm a fan of this team and I still have some pride, and I won't accept anything less than 70% or so against City and Liverpool.

Well, 60%, nobody's perfect.
