I'd say he's more of a 6 than an 8 despite agreeing with nearly everything else you say.

From watching him I think he's better defensively than you give him credit for. He just has the look of a deeper lying player to me. His mannerisms, positioning, reading of the game etc all point to him playing deeper despite some of his weakness's that you point out.

I'm not sold on him personally, hence my comment in the other thread, that it's frustrating we passed on Alex Scott.
Yeah I mean its an odd one and i get what your saying, I think you could make an argument ether way. I am maybe being a little harsh but Im also thinking about the context of the PL. If he were to join now I wouldn't want him to play deeper as I've seen him get dribbled past a few times, physically loose battles, miss time tackles etc and think he could struggle with the step up to the PL and the speed of it. In time tho, once he has improved that aspect of his game and adapted to the league then you are probably right. Personally for me I think Vermeeren was the better talent but obviously HG seems to be the focus for this position so I can understand why we past on him.

In general tho i am the same as you, i think there is a lot to like about Wharton but im not entirely convinced ether and what CP offered for him is probably about what id pay for him at this point.

I personally feel you’ve answered your last point with your first point, we’re looking for a 6 which Scott can’t do.

I have not seen enough of him but watching some videos this morning i just don't see it. Gives the ball away a lot, dives to tackles and they are rejecting 18 million from Palace already. Better value to be had elsewhere surely.

Well if you've only watched a couple of games and you've seen him get rinsed numerous times that doesn't bode well I guess.

I like the look of Wharton, but as I've said previously, how good would Oliver Skipp look at the level Wharton's playing at? He absolutely tore it up at Norwich a few years back.

I'm going to have to watch a game or two because the highlights I've seen of him are underwhelming to say the least. Looks lumbering with slow feet. Definitely ready physically though.

Probably just the video you’ve seen.

He’s a more aggressive Michael Carrick at the same age.

In 2 years he’ll be a full international imo.

Depth and variety for Bissouma.

Fabulous passing and vision from deep.

Wand of a left foot and decent with his right.

Good footwork when pressed high.

Strong mentality.

Sign him up.

Surprised we aren't heavily in for Lucas Bergvall right now albeit we would be competing with the likes of Barcelona/Juventus et al but it's a transfer that's right on point on what we want as a box to box midfielder.

I don't want to make him out as being completely useless defensively. That certainly wasn't my intention at least. Like you said yourself his positioning is good and he has a good work rate. I just don't think the defensive side of his game is particularly strong from what i've seen and what i've read on him seems to back that up. My point was more that once he steps up to the PL he would need to work on that aspect a lot before I'd feel comfortable playing him there not that he should never play there.

Not everyone's..........
Interesting, although not entirely surprising. He certainly seems to be a player that ticks more physical/work rate boxs then technical so I could imagine there would be some disagreement there. Plus the fee would be large and his contract. I seem to remember it being mentioned there being some disagreements about Johnson as well but maybe that was from Gab now i come to think of it.

Interpret it however you want, but remember in a weeks time, that's not what I said.
Ahh ok mate. Thanks for the info anyway. Just trying to add together various bits and pieces but appreciate it doesn’t always work out like that in the end.

I still hope we didn't pass on Scott. He is a 10 and a playmaker. If se did, we are fckg idiots. He is 100% COYS and his technical skills are superior. He is a star in the making.

Tricky one as we did have a lot of work to do in the summer. Maybe it just wasn't the right time to bring Scott in when the money was needed elsewhere. I'm sure it didn't help we didn't sell Hojbjerg either as it left us already stacked in midfield. I guess we still have this issue now but maybe a possible loan back may help as it gives us more time to shift one out. It sounded like Bournemouth acted fast on Scott and we just wasn't in position to sign a midfielder at that time.

I watched him a fair bit when I took an interest in Ashley Phillips last season.

I agree he'd probably start as depth for Sarr, then end up as a 6.

He doesn't have Bissouma's agility and explosiveness when beating the press, but his composure and footwork in tight spaces is very good from what I've seen.

He can take the ball on the half turn and exit with either foot and scans well. This makes it very difficult for opponents to read what he's going to do.

He'll draw opponents in and beat them with wit and guile, rather than raw physicality.

This will open up the pitch for us the way Ange loves from a 6.

With packed defences if opponents choose to not be drawn out and press him, then in time he could be more effective than Bissouma against these low blocks; if they stand off him and sit deep it's like giving an elite set piece taker a free hit to pick out headers and runs in behind.

Defensively he needs work but he's tenacious, driven, and shows a high football IQ so I can see him being very coachable fairly quickly..

Would be a very astute purchase to complement what we have. I'd be delighted if we got him.

I'll trust the scouts on this one - but just watched one video of his highlights - and he goes to ground defensively - a lot. That seems to be poor technique, and a card factory in the making.
