I hope we work on building up through the midfield so that we can supply the forwards the kind of balls they can work with.

As soon as we send the ball into the air we are making the game physical and we ain't gonna do anything with that.

I'm sure we will, or hope we do...
But today wasn't a game to match them at cm.

Get Ndombele in there with Winks and Lo Celso (or for winks if we are playing a 2) to add some muscle and we have players who can move the ball about.

I dont think he was that bad today. He is such an instinctive player that he will always get into those positions where he can create. It isnt coming off and I agree that he shouldn't be a nailed on starter, but he is still an excellent player imo.
The thing is there is one rule for Dele and another for everyone else. Before the goal, our worst player by far offensively was Son, but he is untouchable. Dele has actually had good games recently but no one gives him credit because it seems like he is only ever praised if he scores or assists. Today he was fine. Didn't get much of the ball, but none of our offensive players did. He made a few good runs but poor decisions and final passes meant he was never picked out.

Loads of people were slagging off son's contribution at half time and saying hes not been the same since he got sent off at everton/chelsea

I don't think so. I think most of the differential between City and Liverpool has been luck, finishing and Alisson. No chance they are this far off next season.

But can he be arsed? He’s there for the CL now. Leagues been ticked off.

I’m not sure how anyone can argue Sterling’s challenge on Dele was anything other than a straight red. It’s a leg breaker, goes straight over the ball and into his leg. It’s a red those tackles end careers.

Not sure on either of the penalty calls tbh. They were both close calls. In real time I didn’t think either was a penalty. The one thing I would say is the use of VAR is an absolute travesty. They pulled play back 2 mins for something that was not a clear and obvious error. Absolutely trash. Pretty much all sports use a video ref in one way or another but I’ve never seen anything as shambolic as it’s current deployment. Embarassing, if you made a process that bad in most jobs you would get sacked.

I think we are starting to morph into a Jose side where as you said everyone knows their roles there is nothing wrong with solid defending which we are working to.
Yes we did ride our luck a bit but once we can sort out the up top situation and bring a few more in I think we will go toe to toe with both Liverpool and city on equal footing.

Yep, this season for me is all about building the structure for the next season, if we go beyond that then Jose has done incredible. I felt the transfer window was good business for the long term of the club and not ideal to compete on 3 fronts this season which Jose alluded to himself on the press conference but I'm really happy to see a few bright spots starting to appear in the midst of the rebuild.

He doesn't go over the ball, and studs aren't up.
It's a bad challange, but I don't think there is any excessive force and does go for the ball.

His foot doesn't look like it ever goes above the height of the ball.

I think yellow was right, but is heading close to a red.

The solution starting to become clearer?

  • Mourinho's first 9 matches: 15 goals conceded
  • Mourinho's next 9 matches: 6 goals conceded

The problem definitely becoming clearer:

  • Mourinho's first 9 matches: 21 goals scored
  • Mourinho's next 9 matches: 10 goals scored
If i'm not mistaken Jose PPG from 13 matches in the league 1.77, Poch 1.17 from 12.

Because of Kane's injury I think some of that poor goalscoring return is understandable. We've certainly looked less of an attacking threat to the eye ever since he's gone.

In spite of that, early baseline metrics showing the managerial change was justified.

Didn't see the whole game so can't comment on it too much. Bergwijns goals was excellent, his first touch/control was perfection.
However the thought that kept with me was the sequence of errors city made ending with the sending off, the corner then the foul on Winks (who deserves great credit but they were still mistakes). They were the sort of spursesque errors that have haunted us time and time again against city during the pep era (CL games aside ?) that have ultimately cost us , sometimes leading to some spankings too.
I'm not one for omens but I do believe this pep team are approaching the end of their cycle and are there for the taking if we can step up. Hopefully this could coincide with the scousers luck finally running out .

Can we add Jamie Carragher? He's at least as bad - and boring with it.

Sky are terrible in general. Even when they get a new guy ie Chris hughton today I felt like souness was trying to bully his opinions to fit with his
