Anyone seen much of Sigurdsson?

Where would you play Sigurdsson?

I personally didn't see much of him last season. I remember seeing his goals on MOTD and that long-shot he almost scored against us at the Lane, along with his goal.

So I was wondering if anyone had seen more of him and knew more about the type of player he is? Would he be able to play in Modric's role? Or is he more of an attacking midfielder (VDV) type? I've heard many people say that AVB will incorporate him and VDV in the same team, well if so, what role will he play exactly? My best guess would be he'd play like Jenas as a box to box player then? Or does he not have much pace? What are his strengths (apart from shooting)?

I mean with VDV and Gylfi in the same team at the centre of the park, to me that is an awfully attacking team... Or have I missed something here? Can Sigurdsson play in a 2 man midfield and play a part defencively? Or will he just be used as a back-up to VDV???

he was excellent for swansea, i watched him quite a bit and quite a few swansea matches , i'm not sure though he could play in the same midfield as vdv in a 3 but you never know as long as both put a shift in but Sig is amazingly talented, has a cracking shot and some great passing ability.

Brilliant for Swansea and was played in a very simliar position to where VdV plays , I wouldn't call him a box to box mid at all, will be intresting to see our first lineup that for sure.

I've seen quite a bit of him not just for Swansea but also for Reading and Iceland.

He's not the box-to-box type. Doesn't really tackle often. Not that fast either. A lot of his skills aren't good enough for a Spurs midfielder but he's young and can improve his all round game. The good news is that he's a massive goal threat anywhere from up to 35 yards out. He's also a very good medium range passer of the ball. There probably isn't anyone in the premiership who is better than him at set pieces either. Expect lots ofgoals and assists and to be frank not a lot else in the short term. He's young though and has time to develop the rest of his game.

I've watched Swansea a few times last season. He's a great passer, has a brilliant long range shot, great set pieces. Likes to drive forwards with the ball when there's space, and can also ghost into the box like Lampard (when he was good) on occasion. Not that skilful or fast, but will retain possession for us. I've had a few extensive chats with a Welsh colleague who's a Swansea fan who watches all their games and he thinks he was their best player and has the potential to be truly world class.

Thanks for the informative responses. So I gather he is essentially a carbon copy of VDV but younger (and perhaps a downgrade on VDV)......

So I assume he's here for the future and for the moment as a back-up to rafa..? I hope to god he isn't a replacement!

a bit like vdv yes but does normally play in a mid 3 rather than behind a striker directly. I doubt he is a replacement though, just a very classy addition.

As far as the squad goes he's more of a replacement for Kranjcar than a potential replacement for VDV.

I'm not sure if any of the roles you've got in the poll quite suit him - based on the little I've seen of him. One thing I think he has in common with VDV (and Kranjcar for that matter) is his ability to score from out of nowhere. If we're struggling to break a team down with 10-15 minutes to go he'd be a great player to bring on. Plus he actually seems to know how to score from free-kicks.

Cannot vote for any of those roles, and yes I have seen him play

I would play him and VDV in a 4-3-3 as I have said many times on here on other threads

Sandro - Moutinho - Sigurdsson
Van Der Vaart - Adebayor - Bale

And no VDV wouldn't be on the wing

So the general consensus seems to be that he's a less skilful, but more potent and younger version of van der Vaart.

Could live with that. :D

Very similar to VDV... great ball control, killer through balls, great eye for the goal, can hold up the ball, can even head the ball!! Going to be a cracking piece of business for us!!

2.33 that's the type of ball i'd like to see Bale play more, saying that it'll be a novelty to have players getting into the box

He's a very good goal scoring midfielder and is genuinely 2 footed. He's not and never will be in VDV's class to my mind, he won't contribute as much to the rest of our play. As a contibuter to our team he's more of an in form Tim Cahill (not in style but in contribution) than he is a Lampard or VDV.

*sigh* Brings back memories of when Gareth Bale used to take good free kicks.

Very VDV like. Knows how to thread a pass through the defence to the forward and has two great feet. Have a feeling he's gonna be a fan favourite at the lane very quickly.

Assume we are trying to unload VdV and Gylfi is seen as a younger, fitter, less opinionated replacement, who fits AVB tactical plans better.

If VdV is still here when the season starts it will be interesting to see which way AVB goes.

It's a squad game. Not just about the first 11.

Many times this. Rodgers is a 4-3-3 man and Sigurdsson spent his time at Swansea playing as the attacking one of the middle 3 (with Britton anchoring and Allen doing the high energy box to box stuff) and I would expect AVB to give him a similar role here. vdV has been best for us as a support striker, a role that he could continue to fulfil from the right, especially since Sigi seems to like drifting right (from that video) and the fact that Walker is always up for an overlap.

Importantly though, it would be nice for us to see starting elevens changing to reflect the opposition - proper rotation.
