Yeah I mean its an odd one and i get what your saying, I think you could make an argument ether way. I am maybe being a little harsh but Im also thinking about the context of the PL. If he were to join now I wouldn't want him to play deeper as I've seen him get dribbled past a few times, physically loose battles, miss time tackles etc and think he could struggle with the step up to the PL and the speed of it. In time tho, once he has improved that aspect of his game and adapted to the league then you are probably right. Personally for me I think Vermeeren was the better talent but obviously HG seems to be the focus for this position so I can understand why we past on him.I'd say he's more of a 6 than an 8 despite agreeing with nearly everything else you say.
From watching him I think he's better defensively than you give him credit for. He just has the look of a deeper lying player to me. His mannerisms, positioning, reading of the game etc all point to him playing deeper despite some of his weakness's that you point out.
I'm not sold on him personally, hence my comment in the other thread, that it's frustrating we passed on Alex Scott.
In general tho i am the same as you, i think there is a lot to like about Wharton but im not entirely convinced ether and what CP offered for him is probably about what id pay for him at this point.
