I’d throw VDV in. Good players like to play with other good players. Romero will raise his level and they’ll go for it.

No, reality check: let's not throw in VdV. That would be madness.

Same back 4 as for Shakhtar. Davies is dependable and we know his fitness level, this is exactly the situation where you use him. VdV, meanwhile, has just walked through the door after having spent the summer in flip-flops.

My team would be

Vicario

Royal
Romero
VDV
Udogie

Bissouma
Skipp
Maddison

Kulu
Kane
Son

Brentford will hit it long and high into the box at every chance so I think we absolutely need VDV's pace and height. In fact I can't think of a centre back more unsuited to playing Brentford than Ben Davies

In midfield I dream of lo Celso and Maddison as the two more forward players but I think we probably need a more combative presence next to Maddison and I think Skipp is so underated. He works his arse off, is so dedicated and never lets us down so he gets my vote ahead of Sarr.

Agree with most of that. I'd have Sarr instead of Skipp though. Could also make a case for Solomon over Kulu but I expect Ange to sub both wide forwards after about 60 mins anyway if he stays true to his Celtic form.

Davies is dependable at getting beaten in the air, yeah.

Too early for VDV yet. Outside of that then GLC vs PEH/Skipp was the only other quandry I could see, but why not go full attack. It will make a pleasant change from recent seasons.

I’d think you’d want to get the debut and the jitters and smooth out the roughest edges away to Brentford more than home to United for a debut if I was VDV, Romero, and Ange. But that’s just IMO, never played top flight football

I'd say no better time to throw them in. He'll want to play the game of his life and Ange gets to see how he handles the occasion.
In other news, Orban just scored for Gent. Sign the fooker up. Reminds me of Defoe at Bournemouth and that didn't turn out too bad.

It might be too early to start VDV. Plus, Sanchez did really well for the majority vs Barca and could earn a start.

Subs: Solomon, Perisic, VDV, Richy, GLC, Skipp, Porro, Forster, Davies
I honestly would start solomun for son and GLC for sarr. I know we won’t but just go strong. Son has been poor so play soloman and make players fight. GLC has been incredible in pre season I think he deserves a start

We have had so much nonsense thrown at us past 8 months. I hope we can put a statement performance in first game of the season. It will be tough away from home.

Ofcourse Harry cloud hangs over us - whatever is the Kane outcome, I am praying we put down a marker and team starts the season well.

I would be very confused if he starts PEH, are we not supposedly selling him because Ange doesn’t feel he fits the system?

Why would he start him. He’s barely featured in pre season and when he did he played 6. No way he starts at 8.
