I realize this is highly unscientific - but I just looked up the pace numbers on FIFA:

VDV - 80
Romero - 73
Davies - 67
Laporte - 61
Dier - 54

Sure, its not an exact fit here - but its a good comparison relative to the other players.

Laporte is a bit faster than Dier, and a bit slower than Davies. We can probably do better, given our tactics.
Agree, I think Laporte is a great ball playing defender but too slow for what Ange is looking for.

Sidestepping the issue of using FIFA for speed estimates, I just wanted to add as a further comparison that I looked up Toby and Jan in FIFA 17.

Toby - 66
Jan - 67.

Not that different from Laporte, and FIFA 17 covered the 2016-17 season when we played a high line with an aggressive press and only allowed 26 league goals. Pace is useful but reading the game and intelligence counts for a lot. At any rate, if your defensive plan relies on your CB winning several 1v1 footraces with pacy wingers every game, it might not be the best plan.

I talked my son into signing him on career mode. Paid 12m euros. He turned up a 69 rated player. We both laughed and we’re gutted as we only had 49m left. His pace is crazy. Took Kane off for him and got him a couple of goals lol. He’s now 75 rated. Dier keeps kicking off about him😂.

When was the last time Laporte played for city? Not seen him play for a while. Think we should pass it up and go for a younger quicker guy. We’ve seen in the past how quick players can drop off the pace after turning 30

Exactly!!
Was about to come in and say this.

There are so many things that are required in a high line than just pace.

Yes, speed helps to recover or win a foot race but what if that player makes rash judgements, what if he doesnt have the intelligence to maintain a good position.

Plenty of top defenders over the years have proven a calm approach and knowing where to run is just as crucial as Pace.

I recently watched an u17 game and one CB was about 6ft, rapid and strong yet when the ball went in behind he was trying to slide tackle the opponent rather than just guide them away or hold them up and ended up getting sent off.

Body orientation, rest defence, offside traps all play a crucial part too.

Ir we sign a CB who is quick and also has these abilities then happy days.

Not sure if he’s the answer, but I’d feel more confident going into this season if we had a top class centre back, central midfielder and winger.
The first two positions are the most crucial.

He has a big rep but has been kept out the team by Akanji and Ake. Is he just misused by Pep or is he not as good as his rep is?
Pep's new system that they used 2nd half of last season relies on defenders being physically strong and very good 1v1, Laporte is a good reader of the game and ball-player but that style of defending isn't his strength. He'd get killed out wide in 1v1s against decent wingers, whereas Akanji & Ake excel at that

Well considering we’ll be tucking the full backs in, won’t Laporte get just as exposed playing for us?

Our style may not be intended to be exactly that if city, but its comparable so if he doesn't fit pepes team i don't see why he would with us tbh

I reckon we need a leader in the back 4. Can't see Dier nailing down a place and none of the others seem to be organizers. I'd prefer Silva or Tapsoba since they fit the project better, but Laporte would be a calming influence.

Can’t believe people turn their noses up at Laporte, appreciate the questioning around systems etc but he’s a top level player and we don’t have enough of them. I’m all for it
