You need to decide when you are ready to turn the page on the negativity because this forum is really hard work sometimes. It's like a goldfish bowl version of Twitter and I'd rather post here where there is at least some positivity and senisble dialogue than on Twitter where you are basically just banging your head against a wall.

It isn't healthy or helpful to continue to comment on others trying to take a positive position from where we are in at the moment. These last few seasons have been horrible and this one in particular has beaten down most of us (including me). But let's try and be positive that this era is coming to an end and the club are trying to structure themselves in a way that moves us forward from the mess of the last few years. The win-now manager idea hasn't worked and it's time to get back to what was working. By the sounds of the names we are being linked with for both the DoF role and also the Head Coach role, I am taking it optimistically that this is what we are trying to do.

COYS.
Apparently it's a sin to be positive about anything at all on here.

The absolute worst thing about this whole scenario, all of it: the board, players, lack of manager, ticket prices, lack of DOF, lack of planning, focus on Go Kart tracks over the actual football, the continuously bolstered property portfolio, the state of the squad, the PR fuck ups and the general incompetence in full view in nearly every single facet of this club, is that it kind of renders everything utterly pointless.

What is the purpose of THFC? I'll be damned if I know...

Ambitionless, aimless, barely directionally correct over the last 4-5 years (I'm probably being generous here).

It infuriates me that we likely have people presiding over proceedings that are completely out of touch, outdated, cannot read a room, promote cringeworthy endeavours and just reek of being corporate hacks whose experience and decision making comes from some "modern business" textbook from 2004. It seems they think they understand the game, the fans, what it means to be Spurs, but they are so hideously wrong that it is just laughable.

They strike me as being the kind of group that have blue sky thinking, brainstorms, swim lanes, glide paths, and wanting to know "what good looks like" as their main prerogatives.
Proper Linked-In, cringeworthy, asinine, corporate shitehawks. I don't even think they do it maliciously. I think they're just stupid and hopelessly out of touch and out of date.

I really feel for the fans that go to every game, because they appear to be being completely duped in nearly every way. There was a time when I'd have loved to have been a ST holder, but I've never felt such apathy, irritation, frustration, anger or hostility towards this club as I do now and it's because of ridiculous decision after ridiculous decision which is just hamstringing the sporting side of the club. I cannot abide stupidity and our board are just plain stupid.

I also really feel for those that use football and Spurs as a vehicle for escapism because there's none to be found here at the moment, although that's not me, because I refuse to rely on something that is not within my control for happiness.

There comes a point where you are so full of this weird, confused, raging bewilderment because you cannot see evidence of a single decision having any kind of forethought, and you wonder "how can the board, (who are all paid very handsomely), not grasp this or see this?" They remind me of the hopeless contestants peddling corporate jargon and spiel you'd see on The Apprentice. Knowing full well that it's all just regurgitated stuff they've heard from somewhere that makes them think they'll sound like they know what they're saying.

I literally feel like violently shaking every single one of them and shouting "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK ARE YOU DOING, YOU CLUELESS MORON?!?"

Until this absolute malaise lifts, until wholesale changes are made, we will continue to be essentially pointless.

That's really sad. I used to have hope, optimism, whatever. Now? Nah.

And so what happens, is some people just begin to not care, walk out, not renew their STs, engage with the club less, watch less, start to phase it out of their lives more.

I'll never not support Spurs, but it's so, so easy to see through the smoke and mirrors at board level and understand just how shambolically badly this club is currently being run by the idiots upstairs, that I'll hold out very little hope of this being a worthwhile passtime (or something to be proud of or excited by) any time soon.

It's clear to me that we are going for a different approach on this appointment with the central focus on developing a longer term plan with the four of Levy, Munn, new DOF and new manager working in harmony together and pulling in the same direction. We don't want a big personality who will shape the culture of the club....we want a solid coach who can motivate the team, develop players, apply sound tactics and work seamlessly within the club structure to contibute to the culture.

I think there is some sense in this given the failure of Mourinho and Conte but boviously not without risks. I imagine that has fed into the decision not to proceed with JN and also Poch.

Of course you could also take the cynical view that it gives Levy more control......if you are emperor of Rome do you appoint a hugely popular, charasmatic general to head the army and given him all the resources or do you split power between three individuals and keep a say yourself?

Everything I can find says he's exclusively used 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. To be honest I'm fine with that - I don't want a manager brought in just to fit our current squad - Poch for example never would've agreed to that, I want a manager who implements his style, as long as that style produces good and reasonably successful football.

I've never been a fan of 3 at the back, and it's the clubs' fault that we've overloaded ourselves in that style so heavily given the position of our most recent manager. I much prefer 4-2-3-1 and have always felt it suits us better. 3 at the back ends up being light in the middle, light in attack, and favours counter attacking football. I want Poch-style ball domination and opposition swarming back, and that's what Slot seems to offer.

I don't think all is lost, though. Walker and Rose were never that strong defensively when Poch arrived, but they became part of a well coached team which used tactics which meant their defensive weaknesses were mostly covered whilst allowing them to get forwards effectively. All our wing backs are young enough to be coached to be better defenders, and in the cases of both Porro and Udogie, both could easily play on the flanks in more forwards positions, with traditional full backs behind them if needed.

Lets get the right manager and sporting director in, let them do what they can with the current squad, and fix those problems that persist in the same way we did when Poch arrived and eventually got rid of the likes of Kaboul, Lennon, Adebayor and Assou-Ekotto when they wouldn't fit the system he wanted.

This is the problem really.

Udogie, Spence, and Porro aren't this generations version of Adebyaor and Kaboul.

Dier, Hojbjerg, Davies, Sessegnon, Reguilon are more like Adebyaor and Kaboul as they are obviously average players we need to move on from.

The problem with switching to a 4-2-3-1 now, is that it suits the exactly players we should be looking to get rid of, and doesn't suit the players we should be looking to nurture.

With no CL and possibly no European football at all and a hugely bloated squad of players no one wants to buy, we are clearly not going to have that much to spend in the summer.

If we end this summer with Spence, Porro and Udogie out on loan with Emerson and Davies as our main full backs it is another case of mismanagement.

Nagelsmann has played front foot exciting football his entire career, a large portion of which he used 3 at the back. He is also versatile enough to play 4 at the back.

Hiring a manager that exclusively plays 4 at the back, when he won't be able to make many additions in this transfer window, seems a red flag to me.

I think we worry too much about the idea of back 3 and a back 4 in regards to our squad and a new manager. I think what matters is to look at how much change to their shape is possible within their approach. I think under Jose and Conte, our shape was way too static and so it meant that we needed players to fit absolutely perfectly in that structure.

If a manager has really good shape change though, I think our wing backs can succeed and the key to that is how they utilise the midfielders. I think Bissouma will be pivotal but I wish he was more of the box-to-box CM rather than the player picking up the ball from the defence. I could be wrong on that and perhaps he's perfect for that role but I get the feeling, we'll need Skipp to fulfil that spot. If Bissouma could do that role though, then we could have Sarr as Box-to-Box with Bentancur continuing his transition into Zidane or Bentancur alongside and add somebody with a similar profile to Eriksen/Maddison.

I do worry about Romero though. I think he could undermine everything in his current iteration, I think the right manager can get him to become the top CB. He has the raw ability to be if they prioritise it.

I thought Adebayor and Kaboul were moved on because of their attitude and not based on ability?

It's a different approach all right. We'll all be nice and cosy and supportive without some nasty bully driven by ambition and a hatred of losing interrupting our reverie. And with this comfy and accepting mentality we'll embark on a nice leisurely road to mid-table mediocrity - or worse.
Conte - for all his faults - was right in pointing the finger at the culture of excuses and acceptance of failure at our club. And I have a feeling that this will become even more enshrined by the next wave of apparently lower key appointments. Because in Levy's dream scenario, we just happily plod along without breaking the bank for top quality players or coaches, while he soothes us fans with obligatory murmurings about level playing fields and sustainability...

“Sources say Levy does not want to be unduly influenced by emotion, and there are concerns at the club about Pochettino’s final year in charge, when results went south and the atmosphere deteriorated.”

Of course another view would be that having only given Pochettino one new player (Lucas) in three transfer windows, he started to wonder why he was bothering, having deposited £260 million into THFC coffers through his CL campaigns.

I too do not want to be ‘unduly influenced by emotion’. So I look at the facts that in 22 years there have been 16 changes in the person in charge of the first team, only five have completed a full season, and this will be our fifth consecutive summer transfer window with a different manager.

From all that I conclude that it really doesn’t matter who Levy hires; he’ll be gone soon enough and we will be having this debate all over again.

I’m quick to criticise Levy but I agree with him in regards Pochettino if we bring in Slot, Ange or De Zerbi. I think the club need a completely fresh start and draw a line under what’s happened the last ten years. Start a new chapter with hopefully a new DoF. If we got that I think fans would quickly become excited about things again after what has been a pretty painful few years football wise.

I say go for that bald guy from Holland.
Or anyone that is bald. Bald guys like Zidane, Pep, Spalleti,.Ten Hag and even Conte. They are all winners,

Even among chairmans, the bald guy, is probably the best Chairman.

We cant go wrong with a bald manager.

Great post, mate. Big Ange has been a long-time choice of mine (for all I know!), and, just to add to all the excellent points you’ve made, I suggest that people watch the ‘Postecoglu takes training with a mic on’ Celtic vid on YouTube. Handshakes and good words with each player beforehand, then clear, sharp, easy-to-grasp directions throughout.

The main brief, though, is always to ‘take one touch, then pass the ball and move into space - create space and angles’. This is literally what the great Spurs sides were founded on - the ‘push and run’ sides. He also usually sets up to give one player an entirely free run within his teams, meaning they can link up with play in any way they see fit.

I've also seen interviews with him where he says that he actually enjoys joining a club when they are in need of change, as I gives him more creative freedom to shape a squad and develop it afresh.

Personally, I think he’d be an awesome appointment.

Just to follow-up on what I posted earlier, for those who are perhaps too busy to go looking for it, this is the clip I'm talking about. If i was a player, I'd bloody LOVE to play for this guy. It's drive, drive, drive, but everything is shot through with enthusiasm. I'd imagine that he's very much like Arne Slot (my second choice). Slot has been quoted as saying something close to 'players can only be as good as the team'. And, as down about some of our squad as other folk, I still think there's mileage to draw out of some of them.

Bit of both.

Kaboul was finished as a player and Adebayor wasn't scoring anymore.

Poch had the opportunity to get rid of them because they weren't very good. If they were good players it wouldn't have been supported as well as it was

Above all else, I'm absolutely terrified of Brendan Rodgers managing to worm his way into the job through acing a Daniel Levy led interview

Jacobs has been pretty reliable, no?

If this is the case, I'd personally rank them:

Slot
---little drop bc he might be a dickhead but he also stuck it to Woolwich---
De Zerbi
---big drop---
Alonso
---drop bc not sure if he's progressive enough---
Amorim
---drop bc he's uninspiring---

Maybe this all part of some henus plot to destroy the club from top to bottom. On a serious note, can’t stand the guy and would take any of the other candidates over him.
