If Nagelsmann is genuinely attainable and what he's asking for is actually within our capability then we'd be absolute fools not to give him what he wants.

But if it's another Conte situation where we'd be making promises we can't keep then I'd actually prefer we cut our cloth accordingly rather then overpromising, underdeliving, and ending up in another big mess 18 months down the line.

If we do pass on Nagelsmann I really really hope we're doing it for the right reasons. But knowing Levy, I'm not sure we are.

Levy thought Sherwood was a good idea

The precedent is there, It's really not impossible Levy goes for Mason

There is more than one way of "doing a Leeds"

I've tried to tell people this - only to be met with derision.

Porro and Kulusevski are not yet on the books, and their costs will be added to the transfer budget this summer - before we add a single new player.
We've been doing this for years though. We did it with Lo Celso, Reguilon, Romero.. this is how we operate now anyway. We'll pay for Kulusevski and Porro over installments and then sign players in a similar way. That won't stop us coming up short mind.

Mason should be nowhere near the job with all due respect to him. Heck I don’t even think Kompany and Alonso should be in with a shout (I can see the appeal in some sense)

How stupid and stubborn do you have to be to screw up this appointment? You have literally the perfect candidate fall in your lap and he still has reservations?

In Porro's case, this maybe a blessing in disguise

I think we should all get ready to just enjoy our summers with our families, safe in the knowledge that nothing is gonna change at the club and all this doesn't really matter.
Agree mate, this thread is an echochamber of negativity.

We can't change it so all this doom and gloom doesn't really help anyone.

No one really knows who we will end up with, we were 99% confirmed with Fonseca until the very last minute last time and no one knew about that, it was very out of the blue.

Lets hope that whoever we end up with is a half decent option who plays more exciting football and we go from there.

If people want change or to moan about Levy and the process then take that to the ousting Levy thread or go and protest or chant against him at games but I don't think all this constant worrying in this thread when really no one knows who we will end up on is doing anyone any good.

Fwiw I don't think we will end up with another Nuno or Jose or Conte, I think lessons will have been learnt, the new manager might not be the perfect choice but I'm optimistic they'll be a better fit than the previous 3 but as you say mate lets try to not all get sucked into a negative spiral of overthinking and overdramatising what is going on here with our Manager search as Levy doesn't know who he wants and we can't influence it so lets all get on with our lives or at least focus a bit on the positives of certain possible new managers not just constant doom and gloom.

Nagelsmann has always seemed like the outstanding candidate in terms of his performance at Hoffenheim and RBL, getting teams to gel and perform to a level above what was expected, plus given his time at Bayern he has the ‘prestige’ to be seen as more than just a project manager. (Even though that’s what we need). The very fact he became available at exactly the right time, just finally seemed like time.
However, it appears he’s not as available as one would assume, and maybe Bayern are playing hardball to try and recoup as much of that RBL buyout fee as possible. Really having their cake and eating it, pick up Tuchel for free, but try and change for Nagelsmann who they don’t want. Albeit they are having to keep paying his wages to pull that off.
Herein lies the problem for me. Nagelsmann probably strikes Levy as too expensive to secure from Bayern, unless he holds out long enough for Bayern to finally pay him off. But that’s risky, longer we wait, more chance either someone more attractive comes for JN, or else we continue to spiral downwards due to uncertainty.
Problem is, I don’t feel we’ll properly move on until either another manager presents themselves as a better candidate, or things get so bad Levy has to bite the bullet and pay up/agree to whatever it takes to get JN. But by then how much time has been wasted.

Hate to say it, but it feels like Groundhog Day, we’ll dance around the likes of JN and Slot, with the off mention of alternatives like Amorim and Alonso, before ultimately going for Potter or Rodgers around June/July in my opinion.

Hopefully I’m proven wrong, and we go all in on JN with an attempt for Ragnick.

My concern with Mason is that I think he doesn't get a quality centre back and will keep Dier. I think he sticks with Hojbjerg as a regular too. I think these locker room leaders will influence him.

This is what should be happening anyway. It's foolish to use the club as some kind of emotional crutch.

The problem with this is we might as well just accept mediocrity if we go down this road. We aren't built like Brighton and Brentford recruitment wise and our academy at the upper end isn't good enough to role out many potential superstars. I'm not for one minute suggesting he'd be Levy's puppet, but he'd almost certainly have to toe the company line more than an outside coach would. I feel he'd be a head coach and nothing more. I doubt he'd get much say one who came or left, and I can't see any of our better players wanting to stick around for long.
Totally with you - we need a proper shift in direction, and some hard truths from someone coming in with a blank sheet of paper are part of that.

Mason, for all his merits, has too much history already - we need a totally fresh start from someone with a long term strategy

what has Mason done that people think he can manage in the prem on his own, last 3 games 5-0, 2-0 and 3-0 down where are his tactics to not go out and get battered and have no choice but to try and score the next goal and go all out attack ffs just cause he "is spurs" has come through the academy and done coaching badges etc so did lampard doesn't mean they can coach on their own ffs
I don't think we should give Mason the job permanently, however that 5-0 one was Stellini and he had to pick up the pieces for United and Liverpool (at Anfield). With Stellini at Newcastle we didn't come back at all. United and Liverpool, although we did go behind the team actually went out and fought to get back level (unlucky v Liverpool with what transpired). His subs v Liverpool especially were much better than Conte or Stellini in recent games. He actually made changes to go out and attack.

I get we haven't started great in either of the two, but he had a couple days for United then a couple for Liverpool. We have a group of players scared to make mistakes and the moment one is made they tend to crumble for a short period leading to one or two more goals. At least for Palace he will have had a week to prepare.

Sure, but when there are big changes happening like manager, squad revamp, it's easy to get drawn in and check here and Twitter a lot. All the ITK is that Levy is totally lost, so it's all moot anyway.

As a fan i'd back Mason coming in. I don't think he's rubbish, i think he's learning and i think he has potential. he will give it his all and he loves the club. can't hate the 'man'.

But i do so accepting that we're back 20years, scrapping for 14th-7th and selling our best players as we'd be nowhere near challenging until Mason progresses and we luck out on a few youngsters. [and Daniel Coys would likely sack him for not getting a tune out of a 39yr old Son and bored richarlison].

but doing so would hurt my soul so much. a 'what's the point' moment where our stature, players and club have the ability to zip back up into the top 4, but Levy swings us back to the dark-ages.

Hope these ITK reports are parts of the ups and down of the search, and we hear an 'up' soon. Although regardless of what comes....wtf have they been doing over the past month(s).

I'm not opposed to putting Mason in place permanently. I think the club need some stability and the players might be better placed to work with people they arleady know and not another voice telling them something different. Like i said a moment ago, i think the structure around whoever the next head coach is, is more important at the moment anyway.

Mason has clearly learnt a lot since the last time he had to take over and i think the players look much more comfortable.

My only concern is the reaction of the fans to Mason when we go through do go through a poor spell. He won't get any time.
Harsh that this is getting many funny reactions, it’s a good post all very good points.
