Does anyone really think Levy will change? Lol.

He won't.

The same problems will creep up again and again.

How many times do you need to watch the same movie....

His limitation is that he's not an effective wing back as he has no end product in the final 3rd. This is exactly why he'd be an excellent full back - he can defend, he has pace and serious stamina, he can make good breaking runs up and the pitch and can get forward when needed. Literally every thing being said about him this last season, especially during his purple patch, was that he'd be excellent in a back 4.

In a back 3/5 we will need to sign 2 x first team CBs - circa. £100-120m.
In a back 4 we will need to sign 1 x first team CB, 1 x rotation CB and potentially 1 x LB - circa. £100-120m.

The net spend in both cases is the same and frankly I think it will be easier to find a first choice CB and LB and rotation CB than a first team CCB and a first team LCB.
I mean I hope you're right - I thought Royal was OK in a back 4 under Nuno and obviously looked promising towards the end under Conte but I still think it's a stretch to call him 'excellent'. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if, with him as first choice RB, we're still getting groans weak after week at his limitations in the final third and technical ability, even if he's a good defender. I agree that he's a good squad option and seems to have the apetite to improve, though. Maybe one day he'll be excellent, but not yet.

I think we both just disagree on the spending thing - which is fine. I just see things differently to you and suspect Porro, Udogie, Perisic and Spence would be much less effective in a back 4, clogging up the squad and requiring extra expenditure. Don't think either of us are gonna change one another minds on that one.

All of this formation stuff, especially related to full back/wing back is such bullshit. The positions - full back or wing back - are not that different and you have to be able to defend and attack in both. Its fucking ridiculous that dogshit defending like not looking over your shoulder at the back post is somehow excusable for a "wing back". While not being able to cross your legs is somehow totally ok if your a "full back".

We need a manager that knows how he wants his team to play and a good sense that he can galvanise the team to buy in and play that way to a high level. Not someone who can get the most out of Porro or any other player because he's recently in the door.

Just for fun my order of preference would be...

Nagelsmann
De Zerbi
Kompany
Postegcoglu
Slot
Alonso
Amorim
Enrique
P OKeefe kinda hinted Enrique wasn’t on the list! He has also previously mentioned he personally doesn’t think it will be Kompany.

Also said Alonso was a candidate and has stated JN is first choice.

Just passing on.

If we see a repeat of the shitshow summer of 2021 I honestly don't know what to say.

If it happens again despite hiring Munn then that’s also very worrying. Of course Levy will be involved in picking the manager, but we’d surely be hoping Munn would bring some clarity to the football side of things.

Hope Levy didn’t suffer from familiarity bias and hire someone exactly the same as him.

I think it really can matter when you're playing wingers converted into wingbacks as fullbacks...

I agree to an extent, though. De Zerbi has had great success playing the likes of Pascal Gross as a full-back so maybe the right manager can make it work regardless of the defensive limitations of certain players if they're coached right and the system works.

Didn't know whether to share it as I know the mods don't like Twitter but Ramon Vega who is now an agent I think said it wasn't true that we had approached Amorim.

For me personally, although I have my own personal preference, I'm happy with the names being mentioned. Even when a new one gets added, I can see what we're going for.

Yeh it's definitely a personal choice between back 3/5 and back 4 and there are pros and cons for both with the current set of players we have and the spending that's needed.

Again it's why getting the manager appointment right is so critical. Nagelsmann really is the stand out candidate from this perspective.

I'm reaching my own personal conclusion that i'm not really that fussed who it is.

I think getting the structure in place around whoever it is, is more important.
