Looking forward to going next Wednesday now to see who looks like they are actuAlly trying. Almost impossible to tell on tv but in the stadium it’s much easier to gauge the effort levels.

The strangest thing that since I started going in 1994, regardless of the players and the manager, we lack movement and fluidity. Apart from short periods under hoddle, until the players in their mid 30s started falling apart, redknapp (I recall the Hull match being beautiful) and a more prolonged period for the first 60% of poch's reign, we are so static.

Well, I got my answer and it wasn’t the one I wanted at all.

Any positives you can take from being there at all?

Yes. Personally my anxiety over watching us completely disappeared (I just posted about it in the spurs & mental health thread). I’ve hated watching us on tv so much.

The only positive was seeing Bergwijn score and play well. He looked to be giving his all. I was happy for him. The rest of them couldn’t really be bothered. Son was the worst first half. I don’t think he broke sweat.

lack desire, ability, heart, effort, and simply don't give a shit... its been said before but whoever takes over has a big big job on their hands and why imo it cant be anyone like potter, parker etc has to be an experienced guy to get us out of the massive hole we are in

Haven't seen another thread which discusses sports psychology, so I'll post this here. Quite disappointed in this:

"Manchester United and Tottenham, two of the world’s richest clubs, have no discernible first team-focused psychology department or publicly-listed lead psychologist in place, at the time of writing."

"At both Valencia and Wolves, Nuno Espirito Santo established a reputation for engendering both fear and respect among squad members. In an interview with Beat The Press, Dr Marc Jones highlighted fear of failure as a tool frequently used by athletes to improve short-term performance. As Jose Mourinho found to his cost, the limited life cycle of that approach will place real onus on Nuno’s ability to replicate the respect he enjoyed at Molineux and the Mestella.

With Spurs either unable or unwilling to find a place among Nuno’s backroom staff for former Wolves psychologist Julio Figueroa, the club’s only publicly listed source of psychological expertise is consultant David Burston, who focuses on providing support for Academy players. The failure to find a role for Figueroa seems a missed opportunity, in light of the impact the Argentine’s methods (ranging from sleep training to hypnotherapy) had on players such as Adama Traore."

Don't know the ins and outs of it, and everyone has the right to reply, but on the surface that does indeed look very disappointing.

In a way it's no surprise though; after 30-odd years of supporting Spurs, I don't think I've seen us once punch above our weight, through mental strength and a will to win.

And usually it's the opposite!

I think our players actually lack quality. When you have quality, the desire to win and compete comes with it. We lack quality. The missed transfers shows us what we’ve done over the years. And the times we’ve dared in the transfer market (VdV, Eriksen, Jan, Dembele, Modric, Toby, Lloris), we’ve come good.

I was wondering when this thread would come back again. I think more accurate statements are that our owners lack direction and courage and a lot of our players lack ability.

Lloris is the only winner in the whole squad.
He is the only untouchable. I would be disappointed if Skipp, Romero, Kane or son left but would get over it quickly enough. Only have an affinity with Hugo which considering how we all felt about the team 4 years ago is some change.

Yeah I bumped this at half time. Second half conte managed to eek it out of them.

It’s still the same set of players who seem not to have the hunger though on the whole.

Miles off Chelsea now. So much work to do with this squad.

Not sure why this thread has been bumped. It certainly wasn't a lack of desire tonight.

It was in the first half. Complete lack of desire and intensity right from kick off. So many times this squad of players has let us down & not turned up and tonight is just another example

I thought there was a definite lack of fight and bravery in the first half, coupled with being just not as good as Chelsea obviously.

Second half it looked like they were playing for pride a little more, but it may have appeared that way because Chelsea just didn’t have to work that hard because they were winning 3-0.

but lack of quality was definitely a bigger factor than lack of desire
