People need to stop giving him fitness excuses. You still have to run and at least try, he jogs and walks the whole game. Just because he’s Gareth Bale it doesn’t mean he deserves special treatment

Also when he was fit for Real he still looked awful

Imo he needs to realise he doesn’t get any special treatments and if he doesn’t perform he won’t play the next game. Games like this are absolutely not acceptable

I agree he deserves time, but it's the complete lack of effort I'm pointing out, not his fitness.
When you go for a run when you haven't gone on one in a while, you don't go all out because you don't know what you've got in the tank. He knows he doesn't have enough in the tank, hence the lack of 'effort'. He's just not fit enough.

My issue has been his positioning in the Europa games. His back is always to goal, never on the half turn. However give him time and hopefully his class will show.

Do we think it is fitness or basically he has just lost it? I mean he does look awful and thought this game he would be a bit better than his previous showings but that hasnt really materialised

He has been awful lets admit that

I said this the other day and got absolutely pillard for it :D

I’d rather he ran his arse off for 45 mins than swan around for 60 but that just my opinion on it. could sub him off when he’s blowing out his arse.

There were glimpses of his brilliance against West Ham and he did decently well against LASK. Tonight the whole team looked poor it as one of those days. Bale was always going to take a while to get up to speed, class is permenant, have no doubts whatsoever he will start playing well soon enough , everyone chill ya boots.

This is like early days Jose all over again, people far too impatient and judging too soon.

Do you know what this thread needs?!

Someone else to say how shit he was tonight ??‍♂️!

Give the guy a break, he's said it is like a pre season to him, you can't judge him yet.

If he's still like this after another 4 or so performances then I think yes, we should be concerned but as it is it's too soon to judge him fairly.
My concern is that Jose said pre game that he is nearly back to the peak of his fitness. If that is the case, I would’ve at least expected to see him attempt one sprint. I genuinely don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that in 2 and half hours of football, he hasn’t broken a sweat once. I’m worried that he genuinely can’t run anymore.

Maybe that's the 'nearly' that Jose means? We don't see what he's doing in training. And we know even less about what he needs to do in training. Who knows? I think waiting and seeing is wiser for the moment, is all.

It's hard to judge, certainly right now it is.

Could he have made more effort off the ball, sure but he's always been the same in that respect.

It's also fair to say that he wasn't expected to be sharp until mid-November which considering his time out is about right.

He even said himself that Europa was a bit like a pre-season for him, so he's probably playing it a bit too safe and not wanting to hurt himself. Remember he was quite fragile in his younger days and is probably conscious of picking up another injury.

I imagine that once he's gotten past some of these concerns he'll start to push himself more and make more contact.

I also think it's the PL in which he'll perform better, he's always been one for the bigger stages. The EL is a bit of a climbdown and whilst I don't think he's deliberately putting in less effort, he's probably thiking he doesn't want to over exert himself and get injured in a lesser game when bigger ones are to come.

Let's give him the time to build his resistance again.

I think he should be given 20 mins or so in the PL, depending on the circumstances and continue using the EL as a chance to keep pushing.

Also think folk need to be a bit more realistic about what Gareth is capable of at this moment. He’s not that same player that left years ago. He’s not played regular football in a long long time. He’s needing game time, and match fitness. Whether it’s regular starting in the europa and coming off the bench for longer periods of time or starting matches till his legs go. I don’t know which one is best for him. He needs minutes on that pitch desperately, then I’m sure we’ll see a different side to him.
He also needs to perform in those minutes, though. He was lazy today and made no real attempt to support Vinicius. Granted Bergwijn was equally bad but we can’t say “player X doesn’t start because he’s poor” then start Bale because he needs minutes.
