No he doesn’t, to his credit he does like having the ball. The issue being he does absolutely nothing with it. He either goes diagonally to full backs, backwards to defenders or sideways to hojbjerg. He very, very rarely attempts to play forward cutting passes. He shirks that responsibility nearly every game.

I refer back to my earlier post about Pochettino ruining him.

I think this is the truth of the matter. Our PPG ratio must be pretty unimpressive with these two in the side at the same time.....
They are just bother very very mediocre players. I have no dislike for them, but they don’t bring anything to the team. At least nothing physical, they may be important behind the scenes possibly. Not sure.

Pochettino is no longer here. And he could have very easily played a forward pass with Poch. We needed him to. He just didnt. Blaming that on Poch’s instructions is bullshit IMO. Poch wanted him to be better going forward.

Poch wanted him to be our Xavi and rest with the ball. Keep the game under control with little 5 yard sideways and backwards passes. Winks has struggled to come out of that mode ever since. When he first came onto the scene he'd drop a shoulder and beat a man, he'd look to play the ball first time in the direction of the forwards and he'd play further up the pitch and get into the box.

He is being asked to play a deeper holding midfielder role and it's simply not playing to his strengths.

Hes playing deeper because he can't play further forward in a CM role. He simply does not have the qualities for it. He’s never really been one to play it forward consistently. He’s awful in the final 3rd. Fairly decent enough recycling the ball when we play with possession but that is it.

ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS PUT HIS FOOT THROUGH THE BALL AND THE WHISTLE WOULD HAVE BLOWN FOR FT

That's the most frustrated I've felt over one of our players decisions.

Literally put his laces through that and the ref blows up.

Reminded me of Eriksen trying to be clever away to City in the dying seconds when Sterling's goal was ruled out for offside.

That moment will be analysed with the squad and I'd love to hear the thought process with that action

He really should've smashed it into the stands for the third. At the time I wasn't thinking as much, but rewatching, there was no need to do anything more.

Maybe I don't know as much about football as you but it seemed clear to me that that wasn't an option - even the slightest miscalculation would have been a free kick with Creswell salivating on the edge of the box. He had to try and win the ball legally and with minimum risk which he did. Hardly his fault Lanzini bangs in a fluke from 30 yards.

Micah Richards thought he did well in that 50/50 fwiw. But I suspect he knows less about football - and defending - than either of us

I find this Winks hate utterly baffling. As Jose said when he came on he brought a balance to the side that had drifted as Ndombele tired and the - genuinely ineffectual - Bergwijn was removed. It's no coincidence that our two best chances of the second half happened when he came on the pitch.

Or perhaps Mourinho also knows less about football than you?

I don't personally think Winks is the long term answer for us but the levels of anger and blame on him for this result are absolutely fucking ludicrous. No one's pointing the finger at Bale who came and did fuck all apart from coughing the ball up repeatedly in dangerous areas and one piece of sublime skill followed by a fluffed finish.

The state of you people with your scape goats. He came on. He did his job. He will continue to do that because Mourinho - like Poch - values him. You may not agree but show a bit of respect. For yourselves if not for a Spurs player who gives everything for the shirt.

And he didnt because he really has little situational awareness. Nothing we can do about it now though unfortunately.
There was also nobody behind him which was space he failed to recognise. That’s something Ndombele would be aware of and would shield the ball, roll any pressure and clear down the line. Just a completely different level of player. We lost so much when he came off for Winks. We’ve got to the stage where we need one of Lo Celso or Ndombele on the pitch at all times to have any control of the game. Sissoko doesn’t have the ability and Winks doesn’t have the smarts/mentality/bottle whatever you want to call it. He’s absolutely miles off being good enough for a team of our ambitions.

Agree, the vitriol Winks is getting is totally over the top on this board (surprise surprise) it wasn't his fault for the 1st or 2nd West Ham goal and he got blocked off for the (albeit wordie of a goal) 3rd. You may as well blame Bale and Moura as well as the defence but why not pick on Winks!
