It just feels weird defending him all the time, it's a bit lazy to say he's a shadow of his former self when his record still stacks (and betters) nearly all of his teammates in both formats. It just feels like every time he's batting and doesn't score a boundary off every ball it's a copy and paste of "Root needs some time out as he's regressed so much".
Another great stat from bbc, since 2017 he's the leading test run scorer and 2nd in ODI for England. He's had an average few months in what is ridiculous times. Just doesn't need to be said in my opinion.
Buttler has scored 1 & 3 in this ODI series, are we saying he's regressed since that 100 against Pakistan?
Not saying that at all. Root isn't that type of player and your right his odi record is exceptional and maybe im being a tad harsh on him today.
Its only in the past year which he hasn't had the best of times odi wise
I guess the problem with Root is the expectation on him is so high due to how excellent he was at start of his career and before he took on the test captancy.
His stats over past 2 years back up certainly test wise that his batting is regressing with one century in nearly two years with a next best score of 77 with a still very healthy test average but one that is going in wrong direction.
I personally do think over the past 9 months or so he does look shadow of his former self and lacking in confidence when he comes out in both forms of the game.
Looks like after this game he will be getting an extended rest again as cant see them touring India and Sri Lanka this winter given the covid situation in both these countries. Hopefully this will do him some good and help him work on his game and rebuild some confidence for next summer and next winters ashes. As no doubt we need a Joe Root scoring runs in both ODI and test teams.
