When did we last sign a player with anywhere near the profile of Bale? Was it Klinsmann, or even further back?

Klinsmann was definitely the last one. And that was arguably bigger than Bale because not only was he out of our league at the time but no-one in England signed players like Klinsmann. That was the start of top foreign players coming to England. It was a very exciting summer to be a Tottenham fan (FA Cup ban and points deduction notwithstanding).

That said, I'm fucking buzzing on Bale. These days you hear about these things long in advance whereas in 1994, I think I only heard about Klinsmann on the day. Downside of that is that I'm 48 hours without sleep and am likely to be another 24 until they get this done and announced.

Why the fuck do we do this to ourselves? I was 15 in 1994. I'm 41 now. I should know better but I've even more bloody excited for Bale than Klinsmann. And excited by a club that's disappointed us too many times to mention.

A few Tottenham players play at The Centurion Club near Hemel Hempstead, I am sure Bale will join them
He used to be a regular at The Grove in Watford. Just down the road from me. They have a signed shirt in the hallway of one of their bars from him where he calls it his favourite course.

You're 41, I'll forgive you. But Ossie and Villa signing in 78. THAT WAS BIG. that was the start of Foreign players here.

Ossie and Ricky will always be the biggest surely?

For me, it was the most incredible moment and made me a Spurs fan. The buzz around it was incredible. I was only 8 at the time. But it made me a Spurs fan for life. Second comes Klinsmann - but Sugar’s ‘I don’t care we’ve got Klinsmann’ on breakfast tv is probably peak announcement video stuff.

Surely it’s a bit different with Bale as it’s a return i.e he wouldn’t have randomly joined us if his previous club was United or Chelsea, I don’t think.

Maybe it’s akin to Klinsmann coming back in 1997 when we were shit and desperate. Hopefully that’s the only similarity ?

Stambouli was up there

I’ve just been catching up on a few threads and remarkably I’m not clocking any nervousness about things going tits up at all- am I looking in the wrong place?

Then again I need a three goal lead going into added time before I’m confident

Is anyone, who's as pessimistic as me, feels that a one-year loan is really bad for us?

Worst case scenario: Bale is as awesome as we all want him to be. Loan finishes, back to Madrid paying 600k a week. We say, we want him permanently!" They say, "see how good he is! You can have him for 600k p/w!" We say, "we can't afford that." Bale's agent says, "Thanks for shop windowing my client, he's going to Utd/City/PSG/Bayern etc. See ya!"

The only way the deal is a long-term benefit is that we have him to for two years, or that we have already negotiated the second year and that it's triggered in the summer if all goes well.

I don't want us to be a stepping stone for Bale to play for someone else, is basically what I'm saying.
Made it pretty clear that he only wanted to come to us, rejected united for more money and champions league don't see why he would reject all other options now to come to us and then go to one of those clubs next year
