Just to make it clear, him and gedson are non-comparable. One was the league’s top scorer and in the team of the season, and the other was a kid who had been out of favor with his manager. Also, people are raving about florentino Luis, he barely played as well. Whereas Vinicius is the best player at the club, bar Dias. Yes, better than grimaldo, who took a step back this season.

Odd how some people don’t want him because he plays in a “rubbish league” but are more than happy to sign Daka who plays in Austria and edouard in Scotland ( I’d take both and would be more than happy with either)

Forget about age and potential but I just don't understand how best striker from Scottish league with 1,29 G+A per 90 and best striker from Austrian league with 1,44 G+A per 90 is exciting but best striker from much better Portuguese league with 1,22 G+A per 90 is 'underwhelming'

Edouard is Champions League because free smarterscout plan doesn't have Scottish league

it’s the exact same reason my YouTube scouting is silly. Stats only tell a piece of the story. Look how many of his goals are tap ins or due to horrific goalkeeping. And one year of production.

The others are more exciting due to their growth plane. Best case here is decent EPL backup. Best case with Daka/Edouard is world class striker.

for the $ it will take, need the latter, unless Mendes is able to work some loan magic so we don’t have outlay.

One of my best mates is Portuguese and supports Benfica so I've just been going off what he's been telling me all summer, which is that he's the best striker in their league but that he doesn't think he'll adapt to the Prem as he lacks any stand-out qualities and most of his finishes are the result of team play in the box rather than creating them himself.

But we definitely need someone who can score tap-in goals like him.

It's a typical Spurs signing.

Why anyone at the club is still listening to our useless scouting department I do not know. Another one to go with Njie, Nkoudo, etc etc.

Pay the fucking extra and get a decent player instead of trying to be clever. We aren't clever we always fuck it up.

Depressing.
Sorry, what?

I can almost guarantee if he had, say, signed for Wolves, people on here would be saying that we had missed a trick and should have been in for him.

Before throwing my toys out of the pram, I’ll wait and see if we even sign him - and if we do, I’ll trust Jose and back him all the way.

I’m surprised, genuinely think he looks decent and there would be more optimism in this thread.

I wiki'd Vinicius earlier today when he was first linked. First thoughts were that this would be an underwhelming signing. He's done nothing of note prior to last season. He wasn't even a striker until quite recently. Was previously a central defender and then a defensive midfielder.

But then I also saw that he didn't make his professional debut until 2017, by which time he was already 22. And that actually made me more interested. It suggests that there is a flame burning strong within. To keep plugging away and believing in yourself when no-one else does takes a special kind of character. Whatever his technical ability, I would bet good money that his mentality will never be anything other than first class. He will be determined to make the very most of himself and of this belated opportunity. He will never take it for granted.

Meh...we should have all expected it would turn out like this.

?

He's probably the most expensive we've been linked with so far. I'm not sure how people are viewing this as a 5th choice after ruling out all the others just because we managed to keep this one quiet for longer.

Actually Jimenez had a much worse scoring record at Benfica than vinicius before he went to wolves

Probably the most important factor. Some seem to have jumped the gun on this.

I’m not gonna pretend I’m his #1 fan and stalk him around the world, but I’ve also seen matches as opposed to simply highlight clips. Very similar physically to diallo which I mentioned. Tall yet rather quick with good feet for a guy of his size. Granted, I’ve only seen him play vs. Porto and sporting, but he’s a handful. You can point to the defending, but as a striker what I see is great spatial awareness and movement. He’s a finisher, left footed, with his head, with his right, he’s a natural goal scorer. Most importantly, he has awareness of his teammates, and in possession he is very very good. I’d say as a striker, he’s the best link up/build up player we’ve been linked to, bar maybe edouard. You can all assume this is just due to Mendes, but it’s not like this dude just has nobody clients from Portugal. Benfica fans rate him very highly, he is a big game player. There’s a reason he’d cost 40-50 mil. People were even skeptical of Bruno cuz he came from Portugal, the league is not trash. We can never win. He’s in my opinion only a step down from edouard and Daka in terms of players we’ve been linked to. And those two do play in garbage leagues.
I'm less interested in Vinicius for his in the field talent than I am not being involved in Mendes larger Agent world as I believe it's ultimately a zero sum game. Immediately moving a player whose actual talent level is TBD after one good season is a very Mendes move. Sometimes you get elite talent, sometimes you get the Mendes mediocrity pool. Either way you have to pay Mendes what he wants which is never cheap.

I back Jose, if it’s who he wants, then so be it. But I can also think it’s a bit underwhelming compared to signing a potential superstar like Edouard or Daka. This guy is at his ceiling, which is a good player. I was hoping for a star...

The same thing happens every year, people get carried away with non-stories and tenuous media links to unrealistic targets then throw a tantrum when they don't happen.

Sorry, what?

What do you mean what.

We have signed a load of players from lesser leagues that have all turned out shit there's no two ways about it.

There are players out their like Edouard, Daka that would be perfect. They are a level up from this guy.

I hope I'm wrong and hes and absolute beast. It's just a speculative signing isn't it, bit like Gedson. May be good may not.

You can doh and disagree all you want but you will be the same people crying and bitching when Kane is gone and we are back in rebuild with Vinicuis up top. It's a constant lack of ambition.

Exactly, and I’m sure we can all agree he hasn’t been bad at all. Don’t see how some on here are so negative about the thought of this, by and large you don’t top score in a league by fluke.
