In the Bible, a scapegoat is an animal that is ritually burdened with the sins of others.
Sounds about right for Winks nowadays,
especially when Eriksen and Lamela
are not starting.
or playing.

Even watching those extended highlights, the amount of times he was looking up (first half, countless) to find static players in front of him is yet again an indictment of the system and the players playing in it.
Oh come off it man. He’s just not that good. It’s really quite simple. He excels at nothing. Just an average player.
It makes me wonder what exactly they are working on in regard to the tactics in the build up to a game. I'm guessing that standing still, or hiding behind opposition players isn't part of it.Noone is moving at all. The number of times during games where someone has the ball and everyone runs away from them, or stands watching is frustrating.
When we had Dier, Dembele and Eriksen all in and around that cm, they would all play relatively close to each other making options for who ever had the ball.
Now who ever has the ball has no options, goes back to our cb's who play a long ball we often lose....
This exactly. We don’t have like for like backups for our starters! All the Ams are different in style and we need to think if thats down to recruitment. We need a system to get the best out of our playersLet’s just look at our most successful set up in recent years.
Dier (destroyer)
Dembele (recycle/transition)
Eriksen (playmaker)
Dele (Support Striker/Runner)
Son/Lamela (both different but tenacity/threat outside of the box/attack players)
Kane (9)
Now The viable options we have (no point including crocked players and who can’t play at the level we need)
WinkS (recycle, destroy, playmaker)
Sissoko (master of nothing - but is supposed to be transition (lol))
N’Dombele (transition but runs out of gas after 60mins)
Lucas (being used as a support striker or 9)
Son (outside box threat/being used a support striker most of the time/9 when desperate)
Dele (now being used as our play maker lol)
Eriksen (??)
Lamela (Playmaker/tenacity but rest of team doesn’t press anymore)
Kane (9 or SS when son or Lucas are pushed up top)
It’s an absolute mess and a tactical cluster fuck. And it doesn’t even factor in our terrible fullbacks

Did we need Sissoko? What it comes down to for me is Poch getting it wrong again selection wise. We were never going to need Winks to recycle the ball and help us keep possession in a game like this, we don’t need him in games where we dominate the ball. We need him against the better sides where he shines.
Did we need Sissoko?
But even then you’d rather see Lo Celso.Unfortunately for Winks he is neither defensive nor attacking. Tonight sissoko sat deep which allowed Ndombele the freedom to be our driving force and he was excellent. Winks hasn’t got that in his locker so it appears he has become a bit of a middle man for us which is a shame as I really like the lad.
The only way I can see him being part of our midfield is the 433 with Dier sitting and winks and Ndombele being the other two.
I'd start Winks in games against bigger sides where possession is likely to be even and the game a bit more open because he's a player who is good at making a yard of space for himself and calm on the ball. He'll keep the ball and tick us over. Those games suit him well.
It's just in the games against sides that park the bus having him be the middle man is a bit of a needless role. You don't need a player against Watford to pick the ball from the CBs and shift it to the wings when our CBs are under no pressure so should be able to do it themselves. If he had a bit more of a creative edge or a bit more of a presence it would add something else worthy of starting every week but he neither creates chances or bosses teams in those games vs lesser teams. I'd rather just have one extra attacking player if the opposition are going to let us have 70% of the ball.
So in other words if we're playing Manchester City away I'd play him. If we're playing Sheffield United at home - absolutely not.
