He needs to be dropped for Dier.

I hate this system Poch uses, however if he is going to persist, we need a proper CDM in that position.

Winks does exactly what Mason used to do. He’d expose the defence time and time again by wandering into ridiculous places on the pitch. He needs to sit. Personally I don’t think he suits that, so he needs dropping.

Exactly this, I dont like the diamond but if you have to persist with it play a DM to at least give yourself some stability.

Should be dropped for Dier in a heart beat.

The Bayern team did a great job of pressing winks into trouble and having Lewa drop back and out muscle him for the ball. His 1st instinct is to turn out of pressure and play to the ball back to the CBs, which unfortunately lead to a couple of their goals.

Really like his passion and energy, been good this season. I just can't help wondering; is he just a souped up Mason?

I really couldn't tell you where he fits in our midfield.. Not dynamic enough to be a box to box... Not solid enough to be a defensive mid.. Not creative enough to be an AM.

What is his role?

He's lucky he has the academy player label that gives him a bit of leeway. He's a good squad player but being an automatic selection is a joke. We won't change this diamond formation until he is dropped.

Box to box not a defensive midfielder on his own, surely that showed tonight
Is he? He's never played as one for us.

He looks good playing simple passes in front of teams when they sit back against us. When teams press us like tonight it's a different story and shows his limitations on the ball, which is supposed to be his strength.

He's not Pirlo, Poch needs to stop trying him at the base of a diamond. Will kill his confidence if he hasn't already.

Yeah because teams like Bayern have players who do everything Winks does but quicker and better...and offer things Winks doesn't.

The sad thing was that Winks wasn't in trouble, he just refused to pass to a team mate and turned into trouble time and time again.

He's not good enough imo. Never thought he was to be honest. I dont think he gets in any of the other top 4 starting 11s. But its not all on him. We've gone to shit in so many different ways its hard to see us getting out.
Beginning of the end I fear.

He played well until he got forced into a few errors. Used the ball smartly and pressed hard.

I think a lot of problems are tactical. He's fine defensively when we're actually pressing high and he pressures well in support. He's not yet a decent screen in front of the defence when we're sitting back/wide open/lazily going through the motions.

I also think with him and Sissoko a lot of the times I see them get played around is because they go and chase after someone that isn't their man (usually 'cause one of our attackers is just being real fucking lazy), cant get there and so get taken out of the game, opening a big gap.... Obviously individually they have to be canny, but it's also on the manager to drill it into them as to when to sit in front of the defence if there is no pressure on the ball ahead of them. Or get us high pressing more consistently to utilise the skillsets of the midfielders better.

He was poor tonight but Poch's tactics did not help him. Poch should either have subbed him off or put Dier on to offer protection but he just left him on when it was obvious he was struggling. Being asked to play a role that he is not suited too and then getting slated because underperforms is harsh. I like Winks but not as a dm and it's hard to judge a player when they are not played in their natural position. In a midfield 3 with Dier and Ndombele he would be more effective. When Lo Celso is fit he would become a very good squad option which is probably what he should be right now.

The new jack wilshire

but in reality he’s not anywhere as good as wilshire was either dreadful if he wasn’t from our academy you’d all be wanting off with his head

Winks is a good player, just not a small, shame some can’t see that
