He plays well when teams attack us. He has good technique can take the ball under pressure and use it cleverly making forward passes when they are available and can carry the ball with intent..Had a really good game today. Always seems to play well in the big games.
Very true like Real Madrid a few season ago home and away he was world class. I think certain games suit him, others we need a proper CDM like dier / wanyana etcHad a really good game today. Always seems to play well in the big games.
Thought he was brilliant today, particularly in the first half - one of his best performances in a Spurs shirt.
That said, I'm starting to think that maybe he shouldn't be an automatic starter but should be picked depending on the opponent. As @theShiznit mentioned, he can be great against teams that attack and is actually vital to us beating the press and starting moves. However, against defensive teams who have no intention of pressing us, his best traits are nullified and he's got neither the creativity to break teams down nor the defensive ability to stop them breaking against us. This is why so there was such a backlash against him after the Newcastle game - he made a billion passes but none of them really did anything and his role seemed a bit pointless, exacerbated further by having an even more conservative passer alongside him in Sissoko.
In games like that we don't need someone with Winks' skillset and would be better served playing a straight up DM alongside someone more progressive like Ndombele. On paper it might look more negative, but in having an extra player in the middle who takes risks and has a bit more creativity, we're vastly increasing our chances of breaking down a stubborn defence, while a proper DM (whoever that might be - it's looking increasingly like we need to sign one) would be able to cut out moves in a way that neither Winks nor Sissoko are capable. Horses for courses n all that.
Agreed, although my fear is that Poch will refuse to leave one of them out for Ndombele, preferring instead to sacrifice one of our forward players and playing the 3 of them together in the diamond like he did against Villa. Surprise surprise it took substitutions and a formation change for us to start creating chances in that match.Think this is spot on. The nice thing is with the depth we have this year on paper (please stay healthy), we really don’t have to have a set in stone best 11. We have a nice variety of skill sets in the squad where we can put out an 11 best tailored to the opposition.
It’s clear that Winks and Sissoko aren’t really a great pairing, unfortunately due to unavailable players it’s what we’ve had to rely on the first few games. Hopefully it’s something we won’t have to see too often going forward.

Winks had the most tackles won of any midfielder in the EPL this weekend with 6, only Wan-Bissaka had more in the league with 10. And yet, still gets slated defensively. People see what they want to see.
And he didn’t make a single tackle versus City?
There’s more to being a DM than tackling. Any CM is expected to make tackles and I did see him get stuck in at times, I don’t see anyone here saying he had a poor game. Just that he isn’t the answer in that position long term.
He does not offer the defence adequate protection, anyone that says he does is seeing something that just isn’t there.
