I completely understand people’s opinion that we’d need to sell a big player if Dybala is to be added along with the other players we are very strongly linked to, but in my mind, I have felt like we need to also add a huge name in the attacking 3rd to our squad to change the perception of the club, and fit in tactically. Adding an attacking player/forward suggests a move to 4-3-3..

Winks - Dier, Ndombele - Sissoko, Lo Celso - Eriksen
Son - Lucas, Kane - Dele, Dybala (Bale) - Sessegnon

That would provide us with countless options. We’d be in dreamland! Poch’s comments about keeping Parrott if we don’t sign another forward suggests another striker is on his list. The big question mark however is financing it all of course. Selling Wanyama, Lamela, Nkoudou etc wouldn’t raise the required funds, so I’m hoping a big stadium sponsorship deal is just around the corner.

And, £80m for Dybala!? Palace are quoting that for Zaha!!! I know who I’d rather have!

Yeah...not going to happen. If there's any truth in this, Eriksen and Dybala are linked

Would be much better business than signing Bale back (and I love Gareth), as he's five years younger and actually can play football instead of being injured. But let's be realistic, the chances for either are about the same.

Really don't think that's the case, Bale is on the best part of £600k/week while Dybala is reportedly on around £130k/week. I don't think we'll sign Dybala but I'd say it's far more realistic than Bale, especially if he has fallen out with the powers that be at Juve

Disagree with this. Klinsmann was a bigger name and had been top of his game for years compared to ossie
Disagree. Not much between them but Ossie was the bigger and more unlikely signing coming out of the newly crowned South American Champions. Klinsmann being European was more well known and a very good signing but had already seen his best days, but Ossie at the time was out of left field as the first division then rarely signed players outside of Europe.

It always makes me laugh the certainty with which people declare things “won’t happen” or that we’d never spend that much without selling.

Realistically it would go against our MO to do this, but when was the last time we really invested heavily in the squad? We’ve had a decade of positive/neutral net spend. Maybe they’ve decided it’s for a big push.

This could well mean someone is off, but we’ve needed to be able to rotate key positions for years. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a really strong bench for once?

I like the media going on about how we have to sell and don't have money which helps DL no end in negotiating down. Plus the fact we are looking at a number of options completely confused everyone but is comforting that we are making noises over several big players. Maybe it's not just Betis we are trying to put pressure to deal but RM ... we take Bale at a knockdown package or else we just go for Dybala or someone else. I think RM have very few options so maybe that is who we are squeezing

Anyway Dybala would be a great addition to our first team squad

I’ve seen a lot of these posts about how it can’t be a move to force Betis hand because Dybala is more expensive. Haven’t reached end of thread yet so don’t know if it’s been addressed, but have to disagree entirely with that notion ...

It’s not like our stance on prices is based entirely on convincing a team how much or how little money we have in our piggy bank.

We have a figure we believe that Lo Celso is worth. We aren’t willing to budge much beyond that. We have a figure that we believe Dybala is worth and it’s probably more than Lo Celso for a variety of reasons. Betis don’t have to believe we have no money left in some silly hoodwinking manoeuvre, they just have to know how much we think the player is worth and how strong we are that we won’t bend on that front. And that now we have identified a player we believe to be available and may now use all that money on him instead of Lo Celso.

I’m not suggesting Dybala is purely an effort to put pressure on Betis, however, wanted to dispel the notion that he couldn’t be because he cost more.
Already addressed several times

I think the comparison is a difficult one, if not impossible. Ossie was from a time when these signings just didn't happen, it was sensational in it's own right absolutely different and some might say it changed football. Klinsmann was during an era where football was much more global, on TV a lot more, it was all that bit more in the public awareness.

I think you could look at both as being sensational for their time, trying to decide which was the biggest signing is almost impossible. They were both, in their way and for their time, huge.

I know which one I'd go with, even though I said it was almost impossible to choose :D I'd side with Ossie & Ricky, just because of the effect it had on football. But I'd understand the Klinsmannites argument too :woot:

The first news of this came yesterday morning in Italy. How did all the supersleuths of SC miss it?!?!

It was mentioned, but I, like many I assume, just dismissed it because it was from Tuttosport, who are usually rubbish.

It's actually the only thing that makes me think that it's not just Dan and Ally being fed info from the club. Maybe Tuttosport actually did hear something from the Italian end about it.

Wonder if Rose could be part of the deal as it has been reported Juve are interested. 55m plus Rose with a 45m down payment and 10m in add ons. Go on Danny boy!
