I see in Pochettino’s press conference he said he hasn’t decided who will play in goal yet between Vorm, Gazzaniga and Whiteman, he makes a joke saying they all have 33% possibility to play.
Of course it’s insanely unlikely Whiteman will play but this could be the first step towards him becoming third choice, freeing up a non HG squad spot in time for the transfer window.
So my question is this, how good is Alfie and how good does he have the potential to be? As good as David Button or Jordan Archer or better than that?
being lazy here but i'll c+p i made about whiteman elsewhere recently when people were asking a similar question:
"I was(?) a big fan of Whiteman but he's played so little football over the past 2+ seasons that it's difficult to really hold much of an opinion on him now. When he has played he has often struggled and made a few mistakes but this could just be down to how disjointed his playing time has been ever since Pochettino took him up with the first team. Prior to that he was playing well and was first choice for England in his age group and played at the U17 World Cup back in 2015, since then though he's not even been making their squads due to a lack of exposure. In terms of style he's similar to Hugo, not the biggest but agile and quick off his line, unfortunately, like Hugo his main weakness is when he has the ball at his feet and a few times he's ended up playing us into trouble when trying to pass out from the back. Based on his most recent performances I wouldn't be comfortable seeing him line-up in goal for the first team anytime soon but obviously he's well rated within the club to be given a new deal."
tbh though i will freely admit that i struggle to rate keepers, especially at youth level. unless they stand out physically they all kind of blur into one for me. i would be worried seeing a keeper go from youth football to our first team with no senior experience whatsoever, ideally he'd have at least some senior experience under his belt(regardless of the level) before making that step but as we know poch's ideology is to bring them through internally.
