The only sky pundit worth his salt is Davey Provan, unbiased & fair in my opinion. Not really, they're paid to spend their days watching and analysing football and some of them have even published books on the subject of tactics etc. so to say they have a limited understand of the game is harsh. I'm not talking about the random people who just write nonsense transfer rumour nonsense but the proper journos who write proper analysis. Players obviously have an insight into certain aspects of the game that you can only get by playing, but that doesn't necessarily make them better at analysing a game they're watching, especially not if they're unable to articulate anything properly. For all we know Shearer is an absolute tactical genius but if he isn't able to get that across then he's still a shit pundit who offers no more insight than any random bloke who's watched the MOTD highlights.
I got a good example of this. Freddy Ljungberg is the new pundit on EPL / CL matches on swedish telly and he's just awful. He can hardly put a sentence together the few analysis he does produce are just general sports cliches. He loves talking about Arsenal though.
The best pundits in my opinion are usually ex-managers / coaching staff. Lars Lagerbäck (Former manager for Sweden, Iceland, now Norway), occasionally on swedish TV for CL, is really just a joy to listen to. He's not the most charismatic person to say the least but the way he just deconstructs tactics and team setups is fantastic.
