That would mean that one of Toby, Jan or Sanchez were in midfield which is absolutely not the case.Would have to go back and grab screen shots. Iirc though, tripps wasn't up front too much yesterday. Dier was the first '1'.
Read my other posts in the thread.Toby in midfield?
Er...looks like a pretty standard 3 at the back when we're dominating to me.@Pedro

Click 'player positions'. See tripps as RB there and Jan as mainly LB. Then it's dier as the 1 and then sissy, dele, chris and davies; then 'arry at point.
That's what I kept seeing. Tripps rarely forged up field but davies was advanced most of the game. It resulted in 4141 as dier sat in the hole and rarely had anyone besides him, but often had 4 stretched out ahead of him.
Like I said, it was a bit of a shambles first half - shows how shite everton was - so not surprising at all it's up for question. Calling it as I saw it, though....took me a while to get a handle on it. It was almost inscrutable it was so messy, though.
Lloris
Alderweireld - Sanchez - Vertonghen
Aurier - Dier - Dembele - Davies
Eriksen - Son
Kane
Subs: Vorm, Trippier, Walker-Peters, Sissoko, Winks, Foyth/Oakley-Booth/Edwards, Llorente
Maybe watch the game again with what I said in mind.Er...looks like a pretty standard 3 at the back when we're dominating to me.

Thanks for the link, some interesting stuff on there. It is hard to pin a formation to the way we played, i was asking because I was genuinely interested. Davies was generally further forward than trips, so I guess you could see it as a lop sided 4, I would personally call it a 3 with Sanchez central. But anyway it's all pretty fluid, and we seem to alter formation during the game, with Davies going forward a lot it drags the others over to compensate.@Pedro

Davies looks all of what a couple of feet further forward, hardly a positionally changing distance. Thanks for the link, some interesting stuff on there. What am I missing? Clearly a back 3 with Toby, Sanchez, and Jan/ Dier is even with Davies and Trippier - and only Sissoko pushing up more kept this from the 3421 - and I think that was a function of using that position to push higher, than it was a real deviation from the 3421

Exactly. Just calling it as I saw it when trying to see form in the chaos. I'll watch the game again at some point in have a closer look.

To me its a 5-1-3-1 formation but could also be called a 3-3-3-1 depending on how you like to describe formations.
Personally I liked it, we didnt have quite the possession we usually have but in turn were much more potent in the final third. We could easily have had 5 or 6 goals against a good team at a difficult ground.
Ehh? You've essentially just evidenced that you're wrong. Clearly a back 3 with Davies and Tripper playing somewhere on the cusp of wingbacks and traditional wide midfielders, Davies on average was what, 2 yards ahead of Tripper? That's because Sissoko tended to occupy the space out wide on the right whilst Eriksen drifted more centrally from the left.
They'll also be without Reus & Shurrle so we'll be facing them at the perfect time. With Guerrero and Schmelzer both our their LB spot looks to be a big weakness, Could be something for Son to exploit making those inside right runs
