But we can agree your Captain needs to be a first choice player at least, right?
Yes, of course.
But I don't understand this. Wasn't Pochettino supposed to be assessing the squad before making any decisions?

Yes but there's more to a football club than just football.Man City are full of mercenaries, doesn't do them any harm.
Dont know why you got a "d'oh" rating for that. Seems like a fair question. One thing i noticed about this season was that in many games Hugo was one of the few players who actually looked like he cared (dont worry Daws did too). Not only that but he kept fighting to the end, kept barking out orders and not once did he throw in the towel. In short he was a leader. More so than Dawson for me at least. And when you think about it which other player presents a viable alternative? For captain? Whys that?

I think he is worth keeping. He isn't starting XI quality at the moment but he isn't too far off the mark. In reality he is getting on in age, losing some pace and making some errors but he isn't a huge step down from our current defenders.
In fact, Dawson was arguably our best performed defender last season. A quick assessment of our current CB's.
Kaboul simply cannot be replied upon to stay fit and play 25+ decent games. Last year he showed glimpses of his talent but in general was poor because of an inability to get match fit at any stage.
Vertonghen is similarly injury prone and his performances last year were not as good as Dawsons. He dropped his head and the effort level wasn't as high as expected. But, fully expect him to regroup and be a starting CB.
Chiricheș looked shaky but talented. In truth we can't really predict what direction he will take this year. I think either he will become a quality EPL CB or he will struggle to make the grade.
Why sell him? For the sake of 3-4m? I just don't think that at the moment we can take the risk of letting him go. I could understand if we have a very able and suitable replacement ready to come in. I think even if we sign a star CB from overseas we can do worse than have Dawson as a ready to play backup.
but he's not comfortable enough on the ball for Pochettino's system. .
