Again that's massively oversimplifying the situation. Soldado might give us a better chance, he might not. Is it 18m more certain that he'd get us into the Champions League instead of Remy (as an example)? You can't say that with any certainty.

Either way we won't be spending 25m on Soldado. If we didn't spend 25m on a younger striker who has a season of goals in the Premier League, then we certainly won't on a 28 year old who has only ever played in Spain.

Exactly.

Remy would be a solid purchase so long as it's part of a two-striker overhaul. Injuries and general lacking overall play would make me hope he's a backup option with also the ability to provide cover to all three wide forward positions as opposed to a first-choice striker.

Having Remy, Bale, Chadli, Siggy, Townsend with a couple of out-and-out strikers up top makes sense if we want to really challenge for multiple trophies. Which leads me to really question how we would use Lennon.

Does anyone else think that if we get remy on top of chadli then Townsend will be off?

I understand that this was mentioned yesterday, but there are lots of murmurings up here that Rooney is being offered to us for Bale plus cash.

I would kindly turn down that generous offer to strip us of a prized asset in favour of one they can't wait to get rid of.

By 'kindly' I mean rudely, with a lot of LOLing down the phone and a reminder not to call back. As if it was a double glazing salesman perhaps.

This could be the first season where Lennon doesn't automatically get a place in the side which I think could prove really beneficial for the team and his performances too as i've always maintained that off the bench he could be a game changer for us and it's a way of nurturing him through the season with hopefully being relatively injury free.

I can't see a big fee coming our way for him so wouldn't expect him to leave anytime soon but it'll be interesting to see how he adapts into a squad rotation player and whether he has the stomach to fight for his place or kick up a fuss.

I said this yesterday after Chadli was signed, but I view them as the LWF answers to our 4-3-3. AVB at Porto went with Sylvestre Varela on the left and Hulk on the right. Both were inverted wingers so that they could cut in and shoot. Varela was tasked with being more creative as opposed to Hulk (for obvious reasons, Hulk has a cannon of a shot) so it was a big reason why I think we went with Chadli who while having a great shot on him also has a really solid final ball with both feet.

If anything, it would continue to raise questions in my mind of Lennon's future with the club. Townsend is the closest thing we have to Bale on the right, he played there at QPR and he brings a similar set of skills that Bale possesses. If we want backups to be able to step in without completing disjointing the way the team plays, keeping Townsend as Bale's backup makes the most sense.

EDIT: For some reason in the original post I put Chadli as our RWF - Most definitely meant LWF.

Spurs Clock on SO re McCarthy in response to "When are we signing McCarthy"

I have absolutely no idea. The only thing I know is that we have had a bid accepted and can talk to him.
I have no idea whether he will sign and if not whether the accepted bid will ever be confirmed
Those are the facts. I was told it was likely he will accept and sign but that is me passing on what I believe to be an opinion not a fact

If one of Defoe or Ade leaves then if we get in Remy and another out and out striker then that'll be ok. But would feel slightly underwhelmed if we just got Remy.

To put it simply, yes - if a good offer comes in.

Would be a real shame if he left as he is a proper spurs fan from what I can gather but not much point in continuously loaning him out if AVB doesn't see a place for him.

Lennon coming on late for a guy like Sandro (Paulinho/Dembele in the double pivot) to push up the pitch with Bale, Chadli and whatever striker we have would be unreal late in matches. Same could be said for Townsend coming on late, too. Simply put, unless we do some massive trimming to our winger positions (Selling Lennon and Townsend which probably won't happen), we will have plenty of options.

If anyone should be the odd man out though it's surely Dempsey as he isn't good enough to play up front on his own, not disciplined enough to stay wide and certainly isn't high up in the pecking order when it comes to central midfield options.

There is only one issue with Rooney and United and that is he is not their first choice striker.

If he was he'd score 20+ a season. He is too good to not be the first choice so he wants out.

We won't ever sign him though because he's an absolute winner. He'll only sign for a club that is a title contender not top 4 hopefuls.
Not to mention wages.

We've gone from having pretty meagre attacking options off the bench last year to a complete abundance which is certainly not a bad thing but you'd expect some movement on the out's as it's not feasible to keep the whole contingent happy even with a Europa League campaign thrown in.

I agree, he does have a soft spot for us though.

Also wages put this out of our range though.

I don't see him being on the rise though, I mean he isn't going to get better. Bale is improving year on year. It wouldn't be a smart deal from Spurs' perspective.

Wages and all that are other reasons, of course.
