Gareth Bale has stolen the headlines again after the PFA awards but another Spurs player made it into the team of the year, Jan Vertonghan.

What a season he has had for not only a first season in Spurs colours but also in England. What impresses me so much about him is not only his technical ability and his composure in front of goal, but also his ability to time tackles to perfection. Just when you think he doesn't have the pace to recover he manages to get to the ball in the nick of time.

Has anyone else had as good a first season as Jan Vertongan in Spurs colours?

He's had a very good season considering its his first in the prem. But I still have a few wee reservations about Jan, some of his defending at times has been pretty suspect.

No doubt the good outweighs the suspect though - big time.

Klinnsman is a great shout. Lloris has been pretty special. Berbatov is another great shout. VDV was fantastic from his introduction to the side. Ginola was great.

Agree with Berba and Klinns being the best examples.

Also agree that Modric didn't start well but to be expected given his style and our performance at the time.

The praise Vertonghen gets is OTT in my opinion. Some (actually, make that quite a lot) of his defending is to me pretty shoddy at times.

In very recent times VDV sticks out as someone coming in and just firing from the off.

Lloris has been really impressive. The guy oozes class and at his position we have one of the very best in the world. Not the league or Britain. Ze vurlt!

Jan has been a bit more up and down but that's to be expected due to the position he plays, the fact that he's played out of position for about half of it and the chopping and changing of personnel. Despite that he's had a largely impressive season which speaks to his qualities.

VDV came in and bossed it. Berbatov simply saved us from slipping back, imo. He also made a good player (Keano), very nearly great, for a couple of seasons. Sign of a decent talent that I guess. Jurgen was similar but helped out by the fact that he had one of the most intelligent forwards England has produced in the last 25 yrs alongside him. No doubting his talents though, it was why we signed him after all. Everyone knew he was class. The first real bona fide world superstar to join the prem.

VdV..klinsmann.. Ginola..Gazza...Lineker...Lennon..Davids.. I kinda agree with mpickard, some of Jans defending has not been great, Everton and Wigan both spring to mind.

Some of Jan's problems have been the result of playing LB and playing alongside LBs who are either shite or out of form

Adebayor.....no seriously, I'm not joking. He was brilliant last year, his goal/assist tally shows it.

Fuck me I hope Vertonghen doesn't follow in Ade's footsteps when it comes to 2nd seasons.

I don't see how Vertonghen warranted a position in the team of the year. He either looks like Ledley King or like Chris Perry. I do think he will have a better year next year and playing at CB week in week out as opposed to being moved about every other week will benefit him. Maybe a settled partner in Kaboul will help too.

In terms of best debut seasons, I'd say Berbatov has to be a contender.
