10 changes to the team that started at Sheffield United last time out - Ben Davies the sole survivor from Bramall Lane, and he captains the team. Carlos Vinicius, who scored a hat-trick in the third round at Marine, starts up front again in the FA Cup, and Gareth Bale is back in the starting line-up.
TEAM FORM: Wycombe DLWLD ------- Spurs WWWDW --------- (All competitions)
Championship basement dwellers Wycombe are expected to find us too hot to handle in Monday night’s FA Cup fourth-round tie. However, Wanderers are in good form going forward at present, drawing a blank up front in only one of their last nine matches in all competitions. Wycombe gave us an almighty scare in this tournament four years ago, leading 3-2 at White Hart Lane until Dele and Son struck in the closing stages. The Chairboys will have home advantage this time and can take heart from some encouraging recent displays at Adams Park.
Wanderers beat Cardiff 2-1 here in their final Championship game of 2020, to end an 11-match winless run. Middlesbrough then came from behind to prevail 3-1 here, but Gareth Ainsworth’s side enjoyed a 4-1 cup triumph over Preston last time out. Three goals in the first 25 minutes put them on their way, with new loan signing Admiral Muskwe setting up Fred Onyedinma for the opener, before Joe Jacobson and Josh Knight found the net. North End pulled one back from the penalty spot, but Alex Samuel wrapped up a convincing victory late on. Ainsworth said: “I’m a big believer in the FA Cup, I’ll treat it with the utmost respect and hopefully we can have a nice run.” Wycombe, who have been hampered by coronavirus issues, do have a fragile defence, though, and no team has conceded more Championship goals than them this term.
We are already through to the EFL Cup final and made an assured start to this competition with a 5-0 romp at non-league Marine. Vinicius hit a first-half hat-trick that day, while Moura and 16-year-old Devine also netted.
Following that professional performance, Jose said “We start seriously and we finish seriously. We tried to kill the game as soon as we could and we did that. We were ready for everything. We didn’t want to be surprised. The second half was a question of controlling the result, control the energy, control the potential injury, and of course I’m very happy with the way the players faced the game.”
We didn’t hit the front until the 24th minute, though, and we’re eyeing a similar scenario here. Wycombe’s worst period in Championship fixtures is between 16 minutes and the half-hour mark, during which time they have conceded seven goals and failed to score themselves.
It feels like we have dropped out of the EPL title race, at least for now. But a trip to Wycombe undoubtedly provides us with an ideal opportunity to secure a morale-boosting win. Back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Leicester leading up to Christmas have cost us a place in the top four. However, having taken eight points from our last four league outings, there is no immediate need for panic. Saying that, although we followed our win over Marine, which we played with a second-string of players, that up with another straightforward win against Sheffield United, it will be difficult to predict what kind of line-up Mourinho will field on Monday. But even if we are without a number of key players, we should still have more than enough quality to get the job done. We may have to pick players for this match with facing Liverpool in the Premier League three days later, in mind.
