Why can’t we defend set plays?

To score form a corner/set piece is so bloody hard but teams see to do it against us with ease. We set up the same every game so teams can do their homework and find the weak player/team weakness.

No we can't because we are exposed with our formulaic approach. Doing the same week in exposes your weaknesses and give opponents the advantage. That goes for the way we set up each week as well.
They don't score against us from them with ease though, Wolves had nine corners against us and the first eight never even troubled us never mind the free kicks. Like Hoddle&Waddle said it's because we give away so many of them. The problem isn't poor defending at corners it's defending so deep we inevitably give away corners.

Agree to a point... but teams have taken advantage of our inept set up around set plays. Its hard to score from cornors no matter how many you have. Teams should score more against us. We ride our luck defending once we go ahead. We hope to see games out but havnt mastered it which wouod includ set pieces.

I agree with you, and Hoddle&Waddle, the more you give away, the more chance you have of one going in. It’s almost as if the mindset of our players is ‘keep knocking them in, and we’ll show we can defend them’ but they can’t. A couple of years back we had trouble opening teams up, and often conceding first, that mentality was like ‘score first we don’t care, we’ll still score more’ which didn’t always work. Either way, cos it’s a lot of the same squad in both circumstances, it’s a flawed way of thinking. With the players we have, we should be going out there and bombarding teams, and then if we have to defend, show them that we can. Not invite it on to you for 90mins. And apart from Liverpool, it’s not like we’ve played anyone who are currently a fantastic attacking team. Against City, it worked, they were toothless. Man Utd were just awful. We were lucky against Chelsea, and unlucky/to blame (although only self to blame) against others.

Vs Wolves, it was Davies too busy trying to find where his man was going, and Kane too slow to react, that let the guy in. Until that point, Davies was up there for MoTM for me. He just turns around to look at the same time the ball is kicked. It’s a massive slip up from a guy who has captained at Premier League and International level.

Because we sacrifice possession and territory for defensive shape and discipline, for team of our quality we:
  • Probably give away more freekicks, simply through having to tackle more.
  • Concede more free-kicks in our defensive third.
  • Concede more corners
  • Enable more opposition players to commit to our box due to a lack of our attacking threat, making set pieces harder to defend.

Alternate question why do we let in so few open play goals compared to set plays ?

Exactly.

At some point a cross that simply can't be defended will come in.

Wolves corner today was one of those. Superb cross, excellent movement, renders it difficult to defend.

You play a team like City or Arsenal and you can probably defend those crosses because they tend to lack presence and its not their strengths (despite Arteta believing so).

Defend this way against Palace, Wolves, WBA, West Ham or any team that has presence and quality dead ball players then you are inviting the opportunity.

Today, I could understand why Jose wanted to sit deeper, as Neto/Traore/Podence can exploit space but we allow teams to get to the byline too often which increases the chances of conceeding corners.

Jose needs to find a solution to this. Either sign a quicker CB and push the line up or tell the team to not drop as far back and force teams inside more.
So you are saying it is impossible to defend corners/free kicks 10 times out of 10.
Interesting.

when a team has so many of them you are bound to eventually mess one up. you can practice defending them until the cows come home, but you'll never know where the ball will be delivered exactly so how do you practice them?

Interesting.

it's not impossible, but with the delivery not always being the same your find eventually there's a chance it will find the attackers head and be on target. v Arsenal and Man C they failed to find the target

Because we stop the opposition getting the ball into dangerous positions, for example we stop crosses. The problem with corners and free kicks are that we give them the opportunity to get those chances, ultimately nullifying all the good work done up to that point.

when you invite pressure for 90miutes you will concede and it wouldn't matter if we had Nesta, maldini. Desailly in our back line. its the way we cant ship 3 passes together that causes us to drop points

Every team thinks they’re bad at set pieces as that’s how most decent chances are created by mid to lower table teams.

Found something created a couple of months ago that actually shows us as one of the best in the attacking sense and also in the defensive sense.
