What happens to the idea of players in Spurs history when many are ripped from our grasp?

As a Spurs fan for over 50 seasons I have seen many great players play for us at WHL and all over the country. My early heroes were Greaves and Jennings then Stevie Perryman, Alfie Conn and Glenn Hoddle. Looking back today I still have great memories of their time. Unfortunately, in more recent times, too many of my idols seem to to have left with such acrimony it seems that their place in club history is widely discounted. What they did, at the time, on the field is seemingly diminished by the way they left. This is happening too frequently for my liking. Carrick, Berbatov, Modric (and now Bale) are all 'non-people' in our club story. Surely we need to find a way to say goodbye and accommodate those that move on to 'better' things. Otherwise we will have gaps in our great story.

Only berbatov left badly in recent years, Campbell is the worst one. Bale missed training, big deal. Mostly down to some fans bitterness and hypocrisy.

I'm more moderate than some, but the fans pay Bale's wages - he has stuck 2 fingers up at the contract which nobody forced him to sign and in the process has disrespected all those fans who worshipped him last season.

Modrić behaved like a total cad very publicly.

Carrick is the one I feel sorry for - he didn't really want to leave yet Commoli effectively forced him out.

Sheringham and Keane are good examples of players who have left and are still fondly remembered.

We have to accept that it's different to how it once was. Unless someone does a Judas I don't hold any grudges, a great player is a great player. Personally I don't idolise or even like players on a personal level. That doesn't mean I dislike them either. A good bloke is a good bloke and that's it with me. I just care what they do on the pitch when they are playing for Spurs after that, not bothered that much. I've met lot's of players over the years and some Spurs players have been let downs (or just having a bad day) and Ian wright for instance couldn't have been nicer, he even spoke well of Spurs. Players rarely tell their agents what to do it is normally the other way around and we all know what agents are in the game for. So I'm just pleased for the great games GB gave us and the fact that on paper at least we have stepped up a level with the money from his transfer.

If this thread is prompted by Bale, I think you're overreacting. Bale isn't leaving under a cloud - he's been a great player for us and will remain so in any sensible fan's memories. Good luck Bale, we wish you the best. The only player I have a grudge about is, of course, Judas. Apart from that we have to be grown up about modern football and not get in a huff every time a player leaves us. Firstly, we don't know the truth about the circumstances or what we think has happened, and secondly, if the media had been as voracious as it is now then back in the day you may well have had different opinions about the players you mentioned because stories - whether true or not - would have popped up. We just don't know what really goes on at the club.

? I thought Carrick wanted to go. I feel sorry for him as he didn't act a dick to get it, then got totally undervalued by the Man United faithful for years!

The understanding I pieced together from the talk on here at the time was that at the end of that season he went to Levy and asked for a new contract as he felt he deserved one (hard to argue there). Comolli then apparently told Levy not to bother as there was interest from United and he could get this bloke from St. Etienne who was just as good and would only require half of what United were prepared to pay for Carrick. That worked out really well...

I can't believe Liverpool employed Comolli. Genuinely can't believe it.

Was more gutted/annoyed when Berbatov, Luka and Van Der Vaart left tbh. I was devastated when Gazza left, and was in tears when Hoddle left (I was 8!)

Bale has had a massive impact, and made defences and fans genuinely fear us, but greater players have left in harder circumstances. We're actually stronger for it.

I think once the dust settles we can all appreciate players for who they were when they were with us.

The one exception is Judas, who royally shafted us.

My only issue with Berbatov/Carrick/Modric/Bale is that despite them being excellent players and IMO shoe-ins for our modern day hall of fame, I don't think they stayed at the club long enough to earn themselves the esteem of some of the older players mentioned in the OP.

nah, fuck 'em. non-people is the right term

they remind us of the few that deserve the higher status amongst the support, and why they do.

So Bale signed a contract and changed his mind when the biggest club in the world came knocking, I'm disappointed but I can't fault him for that, nothing to do with disrespect. Anyway I'm sure a number of these fans wouldn't have mind flogging Bale to Birmingham city, when he was still finding his way.

What did Modric do wrong?

LOL forced out by Comolli? That's a new one, forced to go to Man Utd, what a hardship! How do you force a player to go to Man utd? He wanted to go, make no mistake about that.

The only reason the Carrick transfer was accepted by the majority of Spurs fans was because most of them thought getting £18.5m for a guy who cost £2.5m and only passed the ball backwards and sideways, was a great deal, easily replaced.:ROFLMAO:

Carrick wanted to leave,Levy wanted to keep him so he begged Jol to let him leave as United was close to his hometown(load of bollocks) and Jol agreed to sell him.

Carrick did the same as Bale...........kept his mouth shut until the transfer was done.
Who is to say he wouldn't have thrown a strop if his deal to United didn't happen?

It's an absolute disgrace that someone like Steffen Freund an absolute donkey of a player is held in high regards by fans when players of the quality of Berbatov,Modric and Bale are treated like criminals.
Their crime............they wanted to leave and we didn't want them to.
