I agree with the fluid definition of the word legend – it’s obviously relative to the club, but I don’t think it should ever be about trophies. The Lucas/Kane comparison sticks out to me: when they both depart the club (whenever that may be), one will be rightly remembered for his countless goals, his journey from our academy, his sheer ability, while the other will be remembered for that match, that night, that memory and, dare I say, there‘s just something more romantic about that.

I’ve seen a few mentions of BMJ here; so I wonder where people place Pochettino? Again, when I remember him, I’ll remember those scenes after the Man Utd game at the Lane. It’s up there with my best memories of the club, just because of that unity at the time. Like the night in Amsterdam. Does it constitute legend? Maybe, to some – fine line between that and cult hero.

Also Ledley.

You know who should be a Spurs Legend, and isn't?

Lucas Moura. One game, three goals. Winner at the death.

If he did nothing else for the club, he should get a statue for that moment alone.
Just a reminder that the greatest moment in my Spurs life since 1984 was Amsterdam - and Mr Harry Kane wasn’t involved. The biggest damp squib being the subsequent final in Madrid where he was involved, unfortunately as a peripheral figure.

Can't argue with any of BringBack_leGin's original list. You could make an argument for including

Anderton - most Premier League appearances and all-round good egg
Hugo - could overtake Anderton this month, fitness permitting

I'd also agree with Moura's inclusion as a sort of honorary mention or Judges Award

For me a player does not become a legend until he shows he has a lifelong love affair with, and continues to be a great ambassador for, the club. This on top of giving their all for the club during their playing days. Helps if they’re world class in their position, but that is not a requirement.

The likes of Jennings qualifies (despite playing for Arsenal), as do Ledley, Hoddle (despite managing Chelsea), Perryman, Greaves, Blanchflower, Hughton, etc.

I do not consider the likes of Sheringham, Berbatov, Modric, Bale, Carrick and now Kane as club legends. All world class players. But all selfish pricks who are not ‘in love’ with Spurs. I particularly despise ex-players who encourage current players to leave. That is not legendary behaviour.

Note that legends do not have to be one club stalwarts or even play hundreds of games. They need to embody our club values, have an affinity with the fans, and always speaking of the club in glowing terms with no negativity. As such, despite his relatively short stay, Ginola qualifies.

Keep finishing posts like this and people will start wondering why they’ve never seen you and me in the same place :cautious:

Limiting my list to those I saw play…

Legends of the recent past would be quite a short list: Ledley King. I could flesh it out with favourites, but legend should be used sparingly.

Looking further back I would add Hoddle, Mabbutt, Perryman and Hughton.

For me - to be a "Club Legend" you need at least one of two things:

1. You won something for the club
2. Longevity - you played for the badge for a long time.

I'd put Dawson in the later category, even if he was not a "great" player.

I would not put some of the "great" talents as club legends if they were here for a short time, or never won anything (or at least important games).
Nice to see Dawson get a Club Ambassador role.

Bit of a tangent but I think it’s harsh to call Carrick a selfish prick. Decent bloke (don’t think he refused to train or play?) and had a great career with United. We got a good fee for him at the time. Unlike the others I don’t think he made himself out to have a particularly close relationship with the club or the fans either, just a good professional who played brilliantly whilst he was here.

Michael Dawson gets himself on the list. Spurs to the core always giving 100% whether on the pitch or off it.

good point… mentally I’d lumped them all in the same bracket, but Carrick was not the same as the others.

People make mistakes, unfortunately we are humans. You live and you learn.
Not to drag this off topic, but a 30+ year old man hitting his wife isn't a mistake. It's abhorrent behavior and I have no time for him because of it.

Sorry if it's already been said but Ossie is a true Spurs Legend.

Great player, actually won something with us, managed us, ok not the greatest manager but tough times back then... At least it was exciting football!

But more than any of that he is Spurs through and through, absolutely loves the club as much as any supporter ever will ?
