Problem was, is and always has been.
We don't have a good captain. (Forget the King debate and all that 'leading by example BS)
Of all the priorities for the summer spending, for me THIS is the top of the list.

King when fit is a superb leader, Keane's a leader, Woodgates a leader, Zokora IMO is a leader.

What type of player do you class as a leader... let me guess, S Gerrard and J Terry.

I agree. We just need someone to control the midfield consistently. All of this "we need a leader" talk is nonsense.

It's actually not nonsense at all.

Without Ledley, who is our softly spoken leader, there really are none on the pitch.

If you look at United, for example, they've got Neville, Ferdinand, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney ... all those players lead the team. Stand up to be counted. Keano tries - but we've got no 'Gerrard' type in midfield who can grab the game by the balls and get the other fuckers to perform too.

It's not nonsense at all. It's the actual problem we have.

Robinson, Dawson, Woodgate, and Hutton spring to mind and probably others who also do the same that i forgot

Woodgate should be made captain next year in my opinion.

Ledley doesn't play enough games and RK doesnt command enough respect.

You always see Dawson shouting at people. Whether they listen or not, at least it looks like he has some leadership qualities. Unfortunately, his playing qualities very rarely match.

he always looks twice the player when playing along side woody or the king though. he needs somebody to tell him where to stand.

funny you should say that. I was speaking to a forest ST holder not so long ago who told me that Dawson learned his trade for the mighty Des Walker.

Des' legs had gone and he just used to tell Daws where to stand and what to do.

I think he could have done with a season or two more with the big man.

Well, I think it's nonsense. I think we need better players who can control the game. I don't it has anything to do with whether we have a "leader" on the pitch or not.

I think the very amusing tale of what is happening to @rsenal at the moment is a prime example of why leaders are vital.

We need more leaders on the pitch, it has nothing to do with who is captin, we just need players stepping up and taking control.

Someone who can stop players heads drop if we lose a goal, drive them on and give the team a fighting will.

We do need a leader. No question. But as much as that we need top drawer creativity in midfield. It is what seperates the likes of ManU, Arse from us. Match winning creativity. It is people like Ronaldo, Rooney, Anderson, Scholes, Giggs, Nani, Hleb, Fabregas, Van persie, Rosicky etc that are much better than what we have creatively in midfield. Chelsea too have people like Cole, Maluda, Ballack, Fatard etc.
I don't think Liverpool are that special in midfield which is why they have had problems and look a step down from the other three. If we play our cards right and Liverpool don't strengthen in the right areas, they could (should ?)well be within our range next year (and should have been this year).

We need another Davids. Someone with a lot of experience, a strong will to win and is willing to give his team mates a kick up the ass every now and then.

I remember his first season for us. We were 2-0 down to Charlton then we pulled it back to 2-2 which resulted in our team running off celebrating the equaliser. Davids practically ripped each player a new one and ordered them back to our own half as we hadn't won the game yet.

So true. Overall our squad that season really over achieved. We didn't batter anyone in the league (or cup, obviously) but we got a lot of narrow victories by hanging on to leads, something that we can't seem to do at the moment. Of course we had Carrick back then, and King playing alongside Dawson, but I think Davids really was our 'leader' on the field. Moment that summed him up? Maybe that run and assist for Keane's goal after those 2 Arsenal players had run into eachother - no mercy.
